Nothing better when your stuck!, January 15, 2007
This review is from: Gears of War Signature Series Guide (Signature Series) (Bradygames Take Your Games Further) (Paperback)
I ordered the Gears of War Guide along with my game at the same time. I got a peak at it at a Best Buy, but Amazon's price was cheaper. This book goes through every detail of each stage you are going (fighting) through. It gives you step by step instructions on the best way to fight back or outwit the Locust Horde no matter where you are. I am not a professional gamer, so I probably would get stuck on some level more than someone else who has always played these kinds of games. Nevertheless, the game itself is not so complicated that you wouldn't be able to figure most things out. However, there are times when you just don't know what to do, or how to move on, that is when your guide comes in. It gives you awesome maps, shows you were COG tags are, where more ammunition is, and even has pictures from the game to give you hints of your exact spot. Honestly, I don't know how they could've done this guide any better. You won't be reading it every other minute while your playing mind you, but there will be times when it will just be an invaluable reference tool, especially if you are more of a infrequent gamer like me.

Great strategy guide, December 21, 2006
This review is from: Gears of War Signature Series Guide (Signature Series) (Bradygames Take Your Games Further) (Paperback)
With regard to NJ's review, it seems ridiculous for someone who dislikes strategy guides in general to pass judgment on one specific guide. It's like having someone who hates action movies review the new James Bond film; the review is bound to be negative regardless of the movie's merits. The reviewer is predisposed to dislike the material. This is a similar situation. Claims like "it shows nothing" are absurd. The walkthrough text and screenshots are complete and thorough, leading the player through the entire game from start to finish. And there are plenty of extras, like a complete list of all available Achievements, interviews with the game developers and level designers, a poster, boss fight strategies, analysis of all the multiplayer maps, and so on. NJ's statement of, "The maps are only good for showing where the ammunition, guns, grenades, and cogs are," should not be construed as a criticism. The maps illustrate every area in the game, complete with the locations of all weapons, items, ammo, every Cog Tag in the game, not to mention area-specific objects, such as explosive tanks. It's difficult to imagine what else, if anything, could have been added to the maps. This is a comprehensive, well-designed guide for a great game. If you simply don't like strategy guides, there's no reason to expect this guide (or any other) to single-handedly change your mind. However, if you enjoy the extra dimension that strategy guides add to your game playing, then this one definitely delivers the goods.
