Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-- Sharp color photographs of half of the species discussed (identified by common name) and a lively text highlight this introduction to the noisy, agile little lizards called geckos. The book briefly describes physical characteristics, behavior common to all species, special qualities, etc. A two-page section at the beginning of the book encapsulates data given in the main body of the text. Clearly written and well organized, this title is a mostly successful overview of geckos. It is flawed, however, by the omission of some important information. In the section discussing reproduction, the text fails to explain how the animals mate, jumping from a description of courtship directly to egg laying and the birth of young. Only vision is examined in the description of senses; hearing and olfactory abilities are not mentioned. Schneiper's excellent Lizards (Carolrhoda, 1990) presents more detailed information on anatomy, senses, and reproduction. Despite its omissions, Sherrow's title will be a useful addition to most libraries. --Karey Wehner, San Francisco Public Library
