Book Description

April 9, 2009
Dylan Shoenfield is the princess of L.A.'s posh Castle Heights High. She has the coolest boyfriend, the most popular friends, and a brand-new "it" bag that everyone covets. But when she accidentally tosses her bag into a fountain, this princess comes face-to-face with her own personal frog: selfprofessed film geek Josh Rosen. In return for rescuing Dylan's bag, Josh convinces Dylan to let him film her for his documentary on high school popularity. Reluctantly, Dylan lets F-list Josh into her A-list world, and is shocked to realize that sometimes nerds can be pretty cool. But when Dylan's so-called prince charming of a boyfriend dumps her flat, her life - and her social status - comes to a crashing halt. Can Dylan - with Josh's help - pull the pieces together to create her own happily-ever-after?

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 9 Up—Dylan, the most popular girl in school, is dating the most popular guy, and people will trip over themselves to help her out. At least, that's what she's counting on when she accidentally tosses her expensive purse into a mall fountain—but film geek Josh's help comes at a price. He'll retrieve it in exchange for her participation in his documentary about popularity, which he hopes will secure him a place at—and a much-needed scholarship to—film school. At first, Josh's professional drive to finish his movie makes him an overly accommodating doormat to Dylan's divalike behavior, but she softens as he grows a spine and they begin a tentative friendship. When the girl's popularity crumbles at the hands of her now-ex boyfriend, Josh has the opportunity to be the real friend she's needed all along. Dylan and Josh tell their story in alternating chapters. While his voice is that of a mildly geeky Everyman, Dylan's is spoiled and demanding. Her trivial rich-girl problems won't garner much reader sympathy, especially when compared to Josh's own financial status and social exile. The plot is predictable, and the compressed time line of one month seems unrealistic for such a close relationship to develop. Still, the writing is sharp and, at times, funny, so these flaws won't detract from teens' enjoyment of this riches-to-rags title.—Brandy Danner, Wilmington Memorial Library, MA END --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

More About the Author

After a decade-long career in Hollywood, Robin Palmer regained her sanity and chucked her cushy network executive job and expense account to become a writer. Which--she quickly discovered once her savings account was depleted--may not have been so sane. Luckily her perseverance (and love of hanging out at home alone all day in yoga pants and no makeup) paid off with the publication of her first YA book CINDY ELLA, the first in a series of modern retellings of fairy tales set in a fictional Los Angeles high school. This was followed by GEEK CHARMING (the basis of the highly rated Disney Channel Original Movie starring Sarah Hyland and Matt Prokop) and LITTLE MISS RED. Her latest book WICKED JEALOUS: A LOVE STORY, which is a retelling of Snow White, will be out in July 2012. She then moved into middle grade fiction with a series called YOURS TRULY, LUCY B. PARKER, about a twelve-year-old girl whose new stepsister is literally the most popular girl in the world because she's a Hollywood superstar. She lives in a pink barn in the Hudson Valley.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the first one!!!, February 5, 2009

Geek Charming is geek-tastic! Again, I bought this for my daughter and got caught up reading it as well (I actually read it before I gave it to her)

The characters were nicely developed and the story kept me turning the pages. I recommend this book for anyone who likes to read and is young at heart.

Oh please Ms. Palmer, if you are reading this, please come out with more books a lot faster than every year!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure genious! :), February 26, 2009
This review is from: Geek Charming (Paperback)
Wow!!! And HOLY WOW!!!! *standing ovation*

I don't even know where to being. At first, I didn't pay attention to the chapter titles *which I should have but I just wanted to dive RIGHT IN!* and understood the story is told by the two main characters: Dylan and Josh. I love how Robin wrote the book this way and I wish more authors did!

Overall, I saw a little bit of myself in this book (as within Cindy Ella) and also got an inside look into the "popular world." It shows that we're ALL human and we ALL have our issues to deal with; popular or not. It's about whether or not we take the time to think outside of the box and try to put ourselves "in the other person's shoes" and walk "that mile" in them. Trust me...in some shape, way, or form...young or wiser...you will identify with this book and flashback to your high school days *"good" or "bad"*.

GREAT JOB ROBIN!!! I can't wait for the next one!!!! :) When will that be exactly??
