Worth the Wait...,
By A Customer
This review is from: Geeks (Audio CD)
When I first got this CD, my CD player wasn't working, so all I could do was read through the lyrics in the booklet. Broussard is a moving storyteller with an unblinking yet compassionate eye for the details that enliven his characters. The lyrics stand on their own. Then when I was finally able to listen to the CD, I was knocked out by the gorgeous guitar work, strong melodies and relentless rhythmic drive(particularly stunning is "Your Sleeping Face"). This recording is an unusual and very fine piece of work.

Wizard of words,

I really didn't know what to expect as I had only recently heard of Sam through his affiliation with Steve Riley. I was fortunate enough to catch their recent gigs here in Florida.I love this CD! It's not what I usually listen to, being a die-hard cajun/zydeco fan, but I could listen to this again and again. The lyrics are incredible. What a talent Mr. Broussard has for capturing emotions and translating them into music. I am thrilled that he will be getting together with my good friend, Chubby Carrier, to write some songs. I will recommend this CD to all my friends.

From what I hear--from a LOT of people, Sam Broussard has a cult following in SW Louisiana based not only on his dexterity with the slide guitar (on a par with the great Sonny Landreth also from Lafayette, LA) and his tasty guitar licks bred from arcane tunings but also for a wordsmithing talent that is second to none and normally reserved for the "great" songwriters. Broussard is the guitar player in the multi-Grammy-nominated band Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys so "Geeks" would be more of his personal take on the world at large (and what a take it is)!Broussard somehow takes situations and people from "everyday" life and, by some unique interior alchemy, turns them into something quite extraordinary and unique. Many of his songs revolve around fringe characters and episodic remembrances that defy description but, by the time he's finished with them, they take on a timeless (and unforgettable) quality that underscores the human condition as seen through Broussard-colored glasses. You've just never HEARD anything like this guy! Couple Broussard's brilliant songwriting with "I can't believe he just did that" musicianship and exotic guitar tunings and you have "Geeks"--sitting there in the cd bin like a diamond in the barnyard and all one has to do is move a few strands of straw out of the way and...there it is. Pick it up, play it and get ready to listen to a cd that just doesn't get boring--ever. Now THAT'S something different, yes?

Subtle, Melodic, Lyrical and Continues To Grow On You,
By A Customer
This review is from: Geeks (Audio CD)
Sam Broussard's "Geeks" CD is one of those rare find recordings that you stumble upon that makes the art of music so magical. Broussard, from Lafayette, Louisiana, displays a mastery of guitar musicianship and songwriting that incorporates the acoustic folk and jazz influences from the bayou state into an eclectic masterpiece. Excellent, thoughtful lyrics are poetically integrated into melodies that are mature and memorable (- the kind that stick in your mind...). This CD continues to grow on you with each playing. Its real art, people! Highly recommended.

Articulate Storytelling from an Adult Perpective,
By Bay2Bayou (Lafayette, LA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Geeks (Audio CD)
This is one of the most intelligent CDs I've heard in a long time. Broussard is a masterful guitar player and can write haunting melodies that stick in your brain, but the strength of "Geeks" is in his characters and his storytelling. Broussard is one those rare artists who seems interested in adult issues. His cast of characters include the elderly, politicians, lawyers, cops and priests all caught & struggling with their individual ambiguous, thought-provoking situations. Even his love songs have a unique perspective. The CD works as pure music but then, once you have sat down with the lyric sheet, you can't get the songs out of your mind. His lyrics can be both brutally direct and then wonderfully lyrical. Broussard brings to mind & is in the same class with such other great, dark, self-aware, wordy & thoughtful singer/songwriters, as: Tom Waits, Richard Thompson, Graham Parker & Elvis Costello.

I am a professional musician and session guitarist. I have been a huge fan of Mr. Broussard's since the early 1980's in Boulder Colorado. He is unique, talented beyond words, and incredibly beautiful as both a guitarist and singer. He is a truly original voice in a sea of medoicrity. I listen to this CD all the time. I am grateful that there are still artists making great original music, and he is one of the best!
