5.0 out of 5 stars Thanks for giving us the UNCENSORED Spurgeon! FANTASTIC!, March 9, 2000
This review is from: Geese in their Hoods : Selected Writings on Roman Catholicism by Charles Haddon Spurgeon (Paperback)
At last, a publisher has given us the REAL Spurgeon's priceless, too-hot-to-handle "Rome remarks." As an avid reader of the old Baptist battler I can assure you that these are only the tip of the iceberg, but they are quite well-selected in any case.

I have always been greatly amused at the "editing" of Spurgeon's work with regard to Romanism-- among other things-- by the "Powerhouse" Evangelical Publishing Establishment in the U.S. (Check out the censored and rewritten "Morning and Evening" devotionals, for example.) These publishers' genial efforts not to offend Romanists and Ecumenicals would doubtless raise the considerable ire of old Charlie himself-- which they themselves must SURELY realize! Hypocrisy can be quite interesting in it's more "devout and holy" manifestations!

Here, though, is the unexpurgated wit of a gospel preacher who was so bold and outspoken that the Media STILL has to silence him! HA!

This book is a real corker, and 100% FULL of real, biblical, Christian ZEAL!

AMEN!-- Al

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful resurrection of Spurgeon's Protestant wit, September 29, 1999
This review is from: Geese in their Hoods : Selected Writings on Roman Catholicism by Charles Haddon Spurgeon (Paperback)
How refreshing to see in print a wonderful compilation of Spurgeon's comments on the Church of Rome. Of course, Spurgeon lived in a time when the horrors inflicted upon Protestants by Rome were still a fresh part of collective memory. The writings in this volume serve to remind us that ideas have consequences, and the threat to peace and civil society from the whitewashed tombs of Rome are just as real in our day as in Spurgeon's. Many would like to distract us from the historical truth and blind us to the realities of an institution gone mad with power, influence and ill-gotten gain. As George Santayana once said, "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it" - a lesson clear in the words of this great hero of the faith. Mr. Kauffman has done us a great service through his research. If this effort is a waste of time, many of us wish he would do more of it.

4.0 out of 5 stars interesting insights, January 17, 2009
This review is from: Geese in their Hoods : Selected Writings on Roman Catholicism by Charles Haddon Spurgeon (Paperback)
CH Spurgeon the prince of preachers was very cautious and concerned about the practises of the Roman Church.
This work gives you a rich insight to a 19th century Baptist perspective on this subject. Many people familiar with Spurgeon may not be aware of his feelings on this subject.
