A Good Book for Flatlanders As Well!,
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Geezers' Guide to Colorado Hikes (Paperback)
I'm not a geezer (yet, anyway), but I am a flatlander. I enjoy hiking and cross country skiing in Colorado, but the altitude differential between Winter Park and Minneapolis has sent members of my family to the emergency room because of acute altitude sickness on several occasions. Altitude sickness is something Colorado travel brochures don't often mention...but it's something Colorado ski patrollers and medical practitioners know all too well. Flatlanders beware.
What to do? Acetazolamide (Diamox) and acclimation, hydration and moderation. Amazon doesn't sell Diamox...one must obtain that from a pharmacist with a prescription. Amazon does, of course, sell "The Geezers' Guide to Colorado Hikes". For a flatlander, this nicely written book is filled with easy (6,000-8,000 feet) first-day hikes that allow one's body to catch up with one's surroundings before one goes all the way up (10,000+ feet). "The Geezers' Guide to Colorado Hikes" follows a tried-and-true hikers' guide format. Concise directions are provided to each trailhead...the "take it easy" hiking loop is described, and the authors note points of interest to watch for. Based upon my personal experience with some of the authors' routes, I deem their directions to be accurate and their points of interest worth reaching. Bottom line: this is a good reference book for anyone who wants/needs "a kinder, gentler approach" to vertical Colorado. |
