This product worked great for this purpose.

Now I have my HDMI inputs all hooked up and this hooked up between the TV and sound system and since the converter works for Dolby 5.1 the sound is amazing!

I won't be risking my money on any more Gefen products.

The is one of those products that you buy once in a lifetime to solve a very specific need. In my case, I wanted to use my Sennheiser wireless headphone with my new Panasonic Plasma HDTV. The headphones have RCA (composite, Red and White) connectors and the HDTV has Optical Audio Out which requires a Digital Audio Optical TOSLink Cable. After talking to Panasonic tech support, I was told that the two products don't work together. They told me I needed a Dolby Digital audio to stereo analog audio signal converter.
OK now I know that a solution exists but which model do I buy? I emailed both Gefen and the seller asking which model I should buy and both told me the same thing. Ordered it, arrived in 4 days, followed the Quick Start Guide, it works perfectly. I would have given it 5 stars overall but it seems a bit pricey.

My new plasma TV has an optical (toslink) output with no other audio output connections to feed my "vintage" stereo. Bought this baby, got it quickly, and within minutes, had it up and running. Not complicated at all. Does the job it's designed for. So far, it's decoded everything without a flaw. Gefen has a good product here.

I've had two of these now. The first one died after six months. The second one lasted seven. I won't be risking my money on any more Gefen products.

Update 8/19/10: The third, a warranty replacement for the second, just died after seven months of use. One month after the warranty ran out.

GefenTV Digital Audio Decoder

I was so happy to have finally found something to make up for my NEW LG TV's and RCA 5.1 DVD system's lack of headphone jacks. How ridiculous is that? These companies are really in with each other, I'm telling you... But I digress. At least there is a device that will turn 5.1 into Dolby Stereo. I was glad that I had not chuncked our old stereo just yet. It now serves as the amplifier for the signal coming out of this decoder. It IS necessary. This needs to be in the description. The raw analog signal that the digital optical audio is decoded into is rather weak. I tried plugging an adapter onto the RCA jack that allowed me to plug my headphones in but I could barely hear anything. I wish Gefen and Amazon.com would be more specific about this. However, now that I do have it going through my old stereo it does sound great. I only use it for headphones (see my review). This was no problem setting up but will be a problem if one does not have some sort a amplifier. I do believe some sort of fair warning is due, especially after dropping over $100 for something that isabout 2 in. sq. I was glad there were other reviewers who had given warning to buy this and not the converter because the converter will only convert certain types of sound (see all reviews). All in all this is a nice and probably necessary device. I hope that the TV and other home theater component manufacturers will realize that we do not all live in "McMansions." I bought a 42" LG because it was on very massive sale and a local store and not a floor model. Honestly, these types of devices really don't need to exist. Build the TVs right.

Imagine my surprise when I went to connect my Cambridge Soundworks audio to that beautiful new plasma TV and there was no way....not even a headphone jack. It was digital or nothing! For one month we tried to listen to the TV through its speakers, but in order to hear the quiet parts, the loud parts would clip the speakers. So the choice was to give up the Cambridge Soundworks audio that we have loved so much and works wonderfully, or buy one of those sound bar systems that we just couldn't afford right now.

Along comes the Gefen Digital to Analog Decoder. Probably one of the more expensive little boxes you'll buy (other than jewelry), but it is worth EVERY penny. Just plug in your digital cable from the TV to the converter. Plug in your RCA cables from your "legacy" audio to the converter. Plug the box in, and glorious stereo sound!

Thanks so much Gefen for providing those of us who still love their legacy systems with an alternative!

UPDATE...January 2012
The longer I use this product, the more I want to kick myself for not doing the homework I describe below. The most irritating quality of this product is the time it takes for it to recognize input signal then begin outputting it to my Vizio sound system. Sometimes it takes a few seconds...sometimes almost a minute. If power is cut to the device, getting it going again is dicey. It finally got to the point where I simply took it out of the loop and if I want to watch over-the-air TV I just use the Panasonic TV's exceptionally crappy speakers. I am very close to replacing the whole shebang--Vizio sound bar, Sony sub, Gefen converter--with a system that decodes Dolby signals from the get-go. I can't say this enough--DO YOUR HOMEWORK! As a result of all this, I am lowering my grade by another star to three out of five. Does what it's supposed to, but not very well, and for an exorbitant price.

Original review:
I needed this device because (a) I did not read the instruction manual for my Panasonic TC-P42S1 plasma TV thoroughly before buying a sound system to attach to it, and (b) the Vizio sound system I attached to it does not decode Dolby Digital signals. Had I read the instruction manual for the TV, I would have realized that ATSC signals fed through the Panasonic and out the optical digital output are done so only in Dolby Digital, and that there is no option in the TV's audio setup menu to change that. With that knowledge, I could have selected a different sound system for my TV...one that does decode Dolby Digital signals. Could have, should have, would have...but didn't. All these variables presented themselves when I disconnected my cable television service and went with an over-the-air antenna.
