When I replaced my CRT (old style, analog) TV with an LED computer monitor, everything was marvelous... until I realized there was no way to connect my recently refurbished VCR (which I still play lots of tapes on) to the monitor. The VCR has only RF (coaxial screw-on cable) and composite (yellow RCA connector) outputs. And the display, being a computer monitor not a TV, has only VGA and HDMI inputs. Didn't find anything that converts from RF. A cheap box that converts to VGA gave barely viewable results. A popular low-end simple RF-to-HDMI converter I tried gave a terribly limited color palette. (Apparently that doesn't matter to gamers.) And I couldn't find ANY RF-to-HDMI converter costing less than $200 that would retain the VCR image in its original 3:4 aspect ratio. Everything stretched (distorted) the image to wide screen. That's fine for some programming, but it's no way to watch Humphrey Bogart, or a series produced in the 1990s.

This unit solves that problem, sort of. It converts the input comp signal to a choice of various sizes and aspect ratios. The "PanScan" selection produces a 4:3 (or approximately so ... I didn't actually measure both dimensions). So far so good. Unfortunately, it also shrinks the picture, so an inch or so of my monitor above and below the 3:4 image is wasted. In this price range, I expect a perfect solution. It may be great for other needs, but for me it is not. Along with the 3:4 image being smaller on my 27" dia widescreen monitor than it was on my 21" CRT TV, I suppose it's an issue when dubbing tapes to disk. (Will have to research that further.)

A few other notes while I'm at it, although they are relatively minor to the disappointment above.

I play tons of classic consoles and capture the footage. This unit has simple video options on the device which are a lot more useful than you think!
