3.0 out of 5 stars necessary, but disappointing, May 27, 2005
This review is from: Y Geiriadur Mawr: The Complete Welsh-English , English-Welsh Dictionary (Welsh and English Edition) (Hardcover)
I'm satisfied with Y Geiriadur Mawr, but it hasn't solved as many of my Welsh-learning problems as I'd hoped. For dysgwyr, the problem with it is that there are many more entries on the English side than on the Welsh side; it limits your ability to use it for translation. For pawb, the problem with this edition is that there was a major screwup: the Welsh side is numbered 1 through whatever, and then the numbering starts over at 1 for the English side; and somehow some of the pages got switched, so that English page 320 is on the back of Welsh page 319. Finally, there's the fact that words that have been added since the 1960s aren't integrated into the regular text but included as an appendix at the end of each section.

Overall, this dictionary is probably the most extensive you're likely to buy for home, but for people studying Welsh I would recommend Gareth King's Oxford Pocket Welsh-English Dictionary as well - a limited number of words, but lots of explanation and examples of how words are used - and for everyone I would recommend checking out the digital (PDF) copy of the Geiriadur Prifysgol Cymru at http://www.aber.ac.uk/~gpcwww/pdf/gpc0015.pdf It's Welsh to English only, and a little too academic, but it can fill in some of the gaps when you can't find your word on the Welsh side of Y Geiriadur Mawr.
