Book Description

August 13, 1996
Images from the Hubble Space Telescope are transforming our view of the Universe. The planets of our solar system, the birth of stars, the effects of black holes, and remote galaxies are all imaged with a clarity that can only be achieved by a telescope in space. Showcased here are sixty of the finest images from the Hubble Space Telescope. Chosen for their scientific themes and their beauty, this collection includes every kind of known object in the Universe: planets, stars, swirling clouds of gas, wheeling galaxies, remote quasars and active galaxies. This representative selection is carefully chosen to show the power of the telescope and the stunning variety of astronomical objects. Noted writers Jacqueline Mitton and Stephen P. Maran have added lucid descriptions explaining the science behind the images, and the significance of the discoveries made by the Hubble Space Telescope. This accessible summary of the Hubble Space Telescope describes its rich discoveries in non-technical terms.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

YA. An appealing look at our universe. Presenting a concise historical overview of telescopes and their uses, the authors then concentrate on the Hubble Space Telescope itself, pointing out its instruments and the difficulties encountered with its primary mirror and other problems that arose. Successful missions to correct them are also discussed. The spectacular full-color photographs, a compilation of some of the more exciting images produced by the HST, are described in easy-to-understand language. In many cases, they are composites taken with various filters and are shown in false colors, making for extraordinary beautiful views of our universe. Technical information is provided with reference to the type of cameras, lenses, and filters used to produce each picture. The descriptions are thorough, informative, and well condensed. Amazingly, in spite of its brevity, the book details a majority of the types of objects in our solar system from the planets to stellar phenomena to extragalactic objects. This title provides the basics for acquiring not only accurate astronomical facts, but also information on photo-astronomy.?Darrell G. Review

'This superb collection of Hubble pictures, probably the best to date, comprising fifty-six astronomical objects and six other pictures including the HSP itself, and explanatory illustrations, is to be highly recommended.' Irish Astronomical Journal

This review is from: Gems of Hubble (Paperback)
The photos are a good sampling of what the HST has given the scientific community to work with. The commentary of what the Hubble images mean is easy to understand for someone who is interested but is without a scientific background. The human mind becomes boggled by the immensity of the universe and this book gives one a sense of awe of the diversity of manifestations.
