Great product, the right way to do it,

I installed this Manual Transfer Switch to power my homes critical circuits the correct way without risk of electrocuting the power company repair man. I like the way this unit is designed, it comes prewired with with the plenty of instructions that make sense if you take a little time to think them through. If you can't figure the instructions out, call a pro. Anyway, the switch has two load meters that are very helpful once you are powering your house through the transfer switch panel from your generator. The meters tell you how close you are to your generators limits. I found the installation straightforward and logical. I'm happy with the purchase. This can be a DIY if you understand what is going on in the circuit breaker panel, load/wire gauge code requirements, etc..

I purchased this 301060 GenTran Transfer switch for installation into our new home construction. As other reviewers noted, installation instructions were mostly clear. I chose to flush mount the switch adjacent to my dual 200A flush mount service panels. Unfortunately, if you flush mount this GenTran switch you WILL NOT be able to access the L14-30 connector on the GenTran Switch. In my opinion (and my electrician's opinion) this oversight deserves mention from both GenTran and Amazon. Flush mount solutions are easy though...one can either run a power cord from the GenTran's existing L14-30 plug to a remote (interior or exterior) service plug...or in our case, we simply cut a hole in the steel face plate of the GenTran Switch and moved the existing L14-30 plug, thus allowing ready access to the plug from the flush mounted face panel. Our installation was clean and professional. Heck, even the building inspector thought the relocated L14-30 plug was where it should have been originally installed by GenTran. Appreciating the Amazon price paid for this switch ($189), the inconvenience of relocating of the L14-30 plug was a real bargain!

A must for Portable Backup Gens,

Got this to go with my ETQ TG7 7250 Watt portable generator. An electrician charged me 1050.00 to install as I would never try to do this project it's definetly not a DYI! (There were a few other minor things in addition to the transfer switch.) The ten circuits were just right for my purposes and there is the option to add more which is great. Total cost was 834.84 gen, 430.92 transfer switch, 116.61 30 amp 25 foot cord and 1050.00 for installation equals 2432.37. (An additional 1500.00* would get an equivelant automatic system that uses LP and had it's own shelter.) I got to use the setup this past February during a snowstorm that knocked out power. The transfer switch was easy to use and an excellent match for the TG7. This involved rolling the generator out in the driveway cutting off all circuits in the transfer switch connecting the power cord to the gen and transfer switch starting the gen per instructions then flipping the switch in the transfer switch from grid power to gen power then turning on circuits one at a time. A lot to do at 4AM on a cold snowy winter morning in addition to shoveling out a clear spot for the gen and covering it to keep the snow off! The system does work perfectly however and kept our house warm and cozy for the twelve hours of the power outage. One small note is you must remember not run big items at the same time such as a well pump and a water heater. After all is said and done the automatic system is worth checking out because I don't know about you but I'd rather be warm and cozy in bed at 4AM than out in freezing weather doing the manual thing.
*that 1500+ would be for the cement pad for the gen and cover, LP tanks if you don't use gas, installation of the whole system and other items.

My only complaint about this transfer unit is that it doesn't have a built in door to cover the circuit breakers. However, the price for this unit was on the low side, so I will only take off one star. It is too bad that they don't offer a door kit. They only offer a cover, which is in my opinion very overpriced.

This item is a must have if you tend to lose power more frequently than normal as I do. An ice storm during Christmas 2005 when we lost power for 8 days convinced me to purchase a 5500 watt generator and this transfer switch. It got really old running extension cords from a 2000 watt gen I borrowed just to run the furnace to keep pipes from freezing. I can drag the generator out of the shed and have temporary power back to my major appliances, gas furnace and enough lights so that I am not left in the dark or cold in a matter of minutes. You do need to be more than a novice electrician to wire it up properly but once that is done it just a matter of connecting your generator to the outlet (inlet in this case) and flipping the breaker to the generator position to restore power and not worry about back feeding power back into the electric grid (electric companies frown on doing that). Don't forget to try to balance the wattage on the wattage meters when you test it as unbalanced loads can shorten the life of your generator. I have had this transfer switch installed for over 5 years, using it 2-3 times a year, and over all I am very pleased with and recommend it!

I was a little surprised when my electrician suggested that I go online to buy the transfer switch to go with the new emergency generator he was installing. Amazon for electrical gear? But there it was, about $100 less than through a local supply house. It's all hooked up and works fine.

This is excellent product,it was easy to instal and to use.I chose this product because some of the competing product have more wiring involved and it is possible to backfeed house power into your generator. I strongly recomended this product.
