I'd like to address the comment made about our 3028K kit. We always recommend professional installation by a licensed electrician familiar with local and national codes, and familiar with portable generators. We include a power inlet box enclosure in this kit package in order to save the consumer money. We include a power inlet mounted in the transfer switch when plug-in connection is desired, as in a garage installation. But when the transfer switch is hardwired, as in a basement installation, the inlet is not needed, and can be removed. A professional installer would remove the inlet from the transfer switch and reinstall it in the power inlet enclosure...So you're not paying for the inlet twice. That was our reasoning behind the decision - to save the consumer from paying for the same component in the kit twice. We stand behind our products 100%, and we apologize that the information you received was misleading.

My adult son and I recently purchased large gas generators and when attaching them to our homes the electrician recommended this product. We ordered thru Amazon and the items arrived sooner then expected. my transfer switch was installed and worked perfectly, my sons had a circuit switch stuck open on his and notified the company and they made it good

Everything was great with this transfer switch except if you have to change out the breakers and put in more on the left leg side. You have to get more wire to do that. The problem is the tube that comes out of it which goes to the main fits just right with the wires they gave but is too tight to sqeeze 2 more 14gauge wires in it. I had to cut off the plastic end for the wires to make it through. They give you 2 20A breakers on the left and I needed 3 15A and 1 20A breaker in replace of those. So I bought a 15/15 and a 15/20 breaker then added two extra wires. They don't tell you what breakers you will get with it so I had to wait until I received it to plan on what breakers I would need to buy. It had 2 30A double breakers (one double for the generator and one for something else like your hot water heater)on the right side, 2 20A singles on the right, and 2 15A singles on the right. These were two quad breakers- one has 2-15A and a Double 30A. The other is a 2-20A and a Double 30A. On the left they had 2 Single 1" 20A breakers. I removed those and put in 2 doubles noted above. Overall I was pleased with it. The option to take the outlet out of the box so that I could run it up to my garage was nice. Just had to buy the 10AWG cable.

I bought the model 3028 kit in Sept 2009, installed it myself since I'm an electrical engineer and very careful with wiring, and it's been powering 8 critical circuits in my house for over a year (this type of transfer switch is connected just like a sub-panel, so after it's connected with normal utility power the electricity will flow through the Gen-tran switch). I just used it with generator power during a 2 day outage after an early wet snowstorm knocked out power in the NorthEast. Worked great.I highly recommend Gen-tran's "better" and "best" transfer switches (according to the manufacturer's web site, this is in the "better" category). I researched it a lot and am completely satisfied with this switch. It uses standard circuit breakers you can buy at any hardware store. You may need to change the circuit breakers that come with the kit to match the amperage of the circuits you connect. It's easy with standard breakers. I don't recommend the "vintage" design which uses different type breakers that I don't know where you could buy. Recommend you go to the manufacturer's site (www.gen-tran.com) to research the model you need. The 3028 kit is no longer available; the KIT3026N-25 is similar and available through Amazon. UL doesn't want the inlet connector on the transfer switch any more; that's why most models sold now don't have it and need a separate inlet box. Before buying, you or an electrician should plan what circuits you need to connect and determine their type (2-pole, 240 Volt or regular 1-pole 120 V) and Amperage. The special quad breaker on the top-right of the transfer switch serves as the 30 Amp generator input, and provides two 15 Amp 1 pole breakers. If you needed those two breakers to be 20 Amp, that quad-breaker can't easily be changed because it would be a special order part. This isn't likely to be an issue since most homes have plenty of 15 Amp circuits. The breakers in the bottom 4 positions can be easily changed with standard circuit breakers of different Amperages to match your circuits. Use tandem circuit breakers to power 8 circuits instead of 6. Each tandem breaker powers 2 circuits in the space of 1 regular width breaker. If you don't have any 2-pole loads (such as a 240 V well pump) you can expand the capacity to 10 circuits by removing the 2-pole and installing 2 tandem 1-pole breakers to power 4 circuits in that space. If you need the inlet box and L14-30 extension cord (which connects the generator outlet to the inlet box), I found the kits cheaper than buying the transfer switch, cord and inlet box separately. Think about where you will have to place your generator and how far that will be from where you can put the inlet box. You may need a 25' cord rather than 10'. The generator needs to be far enough away from any open garage doors or windows to keep the exhaust and carbon monoxide out of the house. I have a garage under and found putting the generator at the edge of the garage was not sufficient; the 25' cord was useful.

This review is from: GenTran 3028 30 Amp 8-Circuit Transfer Switch/Power Inlet Box/Power Cord Kit For Up To 7,500-Watt Generators (Lawn & Patio)
The GenTran 3028K Kit is actually an upgrade from the 3026kit and is an excellent Transfer Switch kit. The 3026 only comes with a 10 foot power cord, the 3028 has a 25 foot power cord. The 3026 has 6 circuits which can be converted to 10, the 3028 has 8 circuits expandable to 12 and the 3026 does not have a male plug on the transfer switch box like the 3028. I highly recommend the 3028K over the 3026kit. The 3028 Transfer Switch has a male plug built in to the face of the unit where you can plug the 25 foot power cord directly into it. This is very convenient if you want to set the Switch up in a garage or basement and run the cord under the door or through a window. The kit also comes with the 25 foot power cord and a power inlet box. You can use the power inlet box for thru the wall hookups if you like. The male plug on the Transfer Switch can be removed and relocated on the power inlet box, then hard wired to the transfer switch. Two years ago we had a terrible ice storm in southern Indiana and we were without electricity for almost a week. I installed this kit in my house in a couple of hours and I'm not an electrician. I could run everything we needed off this Transfer Switch, the furnace, stove, refrigerator, lights, television, computers etc. It was a life saver. Since 2009 we have had several power failures up to a day at a time and it is very convenient to plug the power cord into the inlet box from the generator, start the generator, and say hello to electricity. No more worries, no more fears. I highly recommend this GenTran 3028K Transfer Switch over any of the competitors. NOTE: If you are not an electrician and you install a transfer switch I also highly advise having the work inpected by a licensed electrician.

Overall, this unit is all one needs for the standard house. As an electrician myself, I found it relatively easy to understand and to install. I did make a few changes though, and that was to change the 20 amp and the 30 amp DP breaker to 15 amp SP. as I had no use for the larger ones. They were easily attainable at Menards. I also brought my essential circuits directly into the Generator panel, thus eliminating the need of running "through" the main panel. This is easy to do on a new house installation. Yes, I was well satisfied with the product as well as the price through AmazonGenTran KIT3026 Prewired Manual Transfer Switch Kit for 6-10 Circuits and Generators up to 7500-Watt

the kit was as decribed and the price for that particular watt and kit was the cheapest for the money and quality around. the great thing about that unit is that the curcit breakers are standard unlike most units and interchangable to any configure. as long as you keep within the max wattage and a common breaker which you can purchase anywhere. would recommend this to anyone looking for a tranfer switch kit.

Unit was very easy to install, took longer to plan which circuits I wanted to power. As mentioned by other reviews, I did have to switch out some of single breakers for dual pole to get to the 10 circuits which also required some additional wire.Bought it in combo with the Generac GP 7000E. The manual transfer switch kit came with 25ft generator cord, plugs and everything I needed to connect to my load center. I can run 10 circuits and almost everything in my house except the AC. Ran it for about 8 hours with partial load on one tank of gas.
