As a female professional I have always considered myself to be relatively savvy in office politics and a superior communicator. After reading this book I realize that I have ignored an extremely important facet of my work. I recognized myself in so much of this book that it was scary. I began putting the "tools" in the book to work and could see a difference the first day that I tried to be aware of my style vs. that of my male counterparts! At the very least I am more AWARE of the things that may create confusion and can make an effort - or not - to speak more effectively. Of course, I want to believe that I would always try, but sometimes we all have to do what comes naturally to us - for me that may mean occassionally going in several different directions to get to my destination, but at least I can do so with an awareness I didn't previously possess. I wish that I had read this book years ago! I'm buying one for my Exec sis, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars The stuff that works!!, January 30, 2007
This review is from: GenderTalk Works: 7 Steps for Cracking the Gender Code at Work (Hardcover)
At last: a book about language that is PRACTICAL, sympathetic and focused on the real world. THere have been plenty of academic studies on the differences in the way that men and women use language -- but they've often been inpenetrable or else hard to relate to the real world. Connie Glaser's book, on the other hand, is totally practical. It explains to both sides what is going on, how to decode each other and how to convey what you want others to hear. Her style is clear and realistic and she knows how these issues play out not in the language lab but in the real world, where miscommunication costs time, money and infinite amounts of ill will. There isn't a business out there that wouldn't benefit from buying this book for everyone of their employees -- and testing them on it regularly!
