Book Description

0231125992 978-0231125994 March 15, 2002

Visions of the Crusades call up images of knights, soldiers, and priests. However, evidence suggests that many women played an active role in the actions and culture of the Crusades. Gendering the Crusades stands as the first substantial exploration of this comparatively neglected topic. Offering interdisciplinary readings of new and old sources that examine masculinity, gender roles, and historical narratives, these essays show the key roles played by women in the military, politics, and family life. From the Knights Templars' devotion to female saints to Anna Comnena's account of the first Crusade, all of the topics covered in the book look at the way society structures and imagines itself.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This is an excellent collection of thirteen articles from scholars... [that] examine to one degree or another the medieval perception of women's roles and presence during the crusades... This makes for enjoyable and profitable reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, fuller view, September 11, 2011

This review is from: Gendering the Crusades (Paperback)
I discovered this gem while recording a text on the Second Crusade for upper level university courses. Most extant historical documents were written by monks or military commanders and so exclude half the population due to lack of exposure or out right fear of temptation. It is sadly true that "well behaved women seldom make history," otherwise there would be information on more women than Eleanor of Aquitaine or Isabella of France. However, women were there, in the thick of it, and all the same gender involved situations came up then as now. This book delves into a fuller picture of what was going on. It is a collection, so the writing talent varies, but it is informative.
