Editorial Reviews

This special collection includes: Cow Town, Whirlwind, The Old West and Sons of New Mexico

Cow Town:Barbed wire is brought to the open range, and the ranchers are urged by Sandy Reeves to fight against it. Reeves secretly plans to bring sheep into the territory but forgets to count in Gene Autry, who makes certain nothing dishonest goes on for very long. Crashing action and catchy Western melodies make this a true Autry classic, featuring the songs "Down in the Valley," "Buffalo Gals," "Powder Your Face with Sunshine" and "Bury Me Not on the Lone Prairie."

Whirlwind:A confederate guerilla raiding federal supply shipments makes his way to a frontier post during the Civil War, and it's up to Army scouts Gene Autry and Pat Buttram to track down these looters posing as Union soldiers.

The Old West: Bronco buster Gene Autry trains wild steeds and then sells them to the Saddle Rock stagecoach line in the Old West. When his only competitor tries to wipe him out, Gene teams up with a preacher to tame the town that the law forgot. Gene is at his rockin', sockin' best singing songs of faith and participating in numerous gun battles as well as in a fast and furious stagecoach race. Featuring Gail Davis as the courageous stagecoach line manager, Pat Buttram as a humorous traveling peddler, and Little Champ who helps his pa and Gene. Includes original theatrical trailer.

Sons of New Mexico:Cattleman Gene Autry becomes the guardian of a wayward boy deeply indebted to a gambler. Hoping to straighten him out, Gene sends the boy to the New Mexico Military Institute, but the lad flees and is framed for an ex-jockey's murder. Full of rugged action and smooth Western songs, this was Autry's 70th screen feature and includes such tunes as "Can't Shake the Sands of Texas from My Shoes," "There's a Rainbow on the Rio Colorado" and "The Honey Song."

5.0 out of 5 stars The Singing Cowboy is Back in the Saddle Again March 6, 2009
Before I explain why EVERY Gene Autry fan should have DVDs like these in his or her collection, let me clear up a misconception. This product has absolutely NOTHING to do with the Gene Autry TV Show.

This set of two DVDs contains 10 Gene Autry movies which millions of little buckaroos used to watch at their local theaters on Saturday afternoons in the 1930s, '40s and early '50s. The films range in length from 54 to 70 minutes.

By contrast, The Gene Autry TV Show was 30 minutes long and was broadcast in the 1950s.

While the quality of the DVDs in Gene Autry Collection, Vol. 1 by Pop Flix is not quite as good as you'll find in Autry's own company's releases or on the Encore Westerns Channel, it's not bad for the price. After all, how can you beat 10 Gene Autry movies for 69 cents apiece?

And this set contains a real plus for Gene Autry collectors -- Autry and sidekick Smiley Burnette's first screen appearances. That took place in 1934 when they appeared as dance band members in the Ken Maynard (and Gabby Hayes) film "In Old Santa Fe."

Autry and Burnette did not even receive screen credits in this film, but soon after, Autry began his meteoric rise to the top of Hollywood's film attractions.

Gene Autry fans -- and there are probably millions of us still around -- can't go wrong having this set of films in our collections.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun old Popeye romps in a clear reproduction. March 25, 1999
Format:VHS Tape
This video is great for those who remember the Max Fleisher Popeye and the a.a.p. movie Popeye as well. The video and audio are refreshingly clear and the cartoons are true Popeye stuff, not the later watered down t.v. stuff by the same name.
I would have gone for the 5 stars if it were all Max Fleisher....but I guess some people have to have the color stuff.

My grandkids love these old westerns just like I did when I was a kid. They are 8 and under, so these old westerns from the 40's must be timeless.

I bought the set and was happy with Amazon's usual great service, but will not support anymore releases by Timeless Media and Gene Autry Entertainment as they put a bug on "Melody Trail" every 15 minutes.

I e-mailed Timeless and they claim piracy problems, well how about using a new anti-piracy prodcut called "Macrovision?" To make people who are not taping these films but spending their hard earned money have to have a product with a bug is ludicrous!

I grow up with the Duke, Autry, Lone Ranger, Hoppalong, and all the silver screen cowboys. The movie industry have a hard time staying up with these classic hero's. These guy's were part of my life back then. I still enjoy watching the oldies.
Keep them all coming, I enjoy them...
