Book Description

Gene Roddenberry's Earth December 7, 2003
Cece Robin is a simple fourth-grade schoolteacher. A chance meeting with a splinter group of the Resistance changes her life. She would never dream of getting involved in their plot to assassinate the Taelon leader Zo'or she'd never kill anyone-not even an alien Taelon!
Her refusal makes her dangerous to the Resistance-and a suspect in the eyes of the Taelons. By great good luck she meets up with Augur, whom she puts in a terrible fix. He-the ultimate loner, whose credo is "I'm out for nobody but myself"-risks his cover, his life, and worst of all, possibly, the loss of some income, to save his favorite teacher from the Taelons and the Resistance.
Can Augur save Cece without crippling the Resistance and destroying humanity's hope for the future? Maybe. But for sure, he's really going to mess up his social life!

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Following in the footsteps of such eminent SF authors as James White (The First Protector) and Fred Saberhagen (The Arrival), Smith contributes a taut and gripping tie-in novel to the TV series from the late creator of Star Trek. Cecilia Robin, a southern California fourth-grade teacher, has reason to worry when the alien Taelons take an interest in her. After all, the Taelons have a habit of implanting CVIs, devices that bring about disturbing behavioral changes, in the base of the neck of uncooperative humans. Not one to make trouble, Cece refuses a former student's request to join a splinter group of the Resistance and take part in an assassination attempt. Soon she's both a target for the rebels and the Taelons, and is on the run. Enter the resourceful Augur to protect her, but even he can't tell her who used computer networks to vaporize her car. In their flight across the country, Cece and Augur discover that the Taelons are aware of the assassination attempt, awaiting an excuse to expand and make acceptable the implantation of CVIs in college students. The author, while good at fast-moving action, also provides some food for thought in her depiction of how a Web-like computer system might work within a "benevolent" totalitarian society. Star Trek fans should be more than satisfied. (Nov. 16)novels, Derelict for Trade and A Mind for Trade.

From Booklist

Smith's contribution to the multimedia universe of Earth: Final Conflict is a satisfying adventure, comparable to series (and Star Trek) creator Gene Roddenberry's best concoctions. Cecilia ("Cece") Robin is a fourth-grade teacher targeted for a mysterious Taelon education project. Rather than risking what she and her boss fear might be one of the notorious Zo'or's dastardly plots, she runs--straight to a resistance cell, in fact, the leader of which wants her to carry out the opening sally of a violent uprising. Cece believes that violence doesn't solve problems and stands by her convictions. Series regular Augur rescues Cece from subsequent imprisonment, and the two flee across the country to stop the plot before it goes too far. That journey, as quests often do, teaches them valuable lessons. Telling a story that flows beautifully, Smith develops Augur, in particular, wonderfully well. Regina Schroeder

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad at all... My first E:FC read, September 27, 2001
Ive heard bad things about some of the previous E:FC books but this one was the first I decided read. I must say it was very well done. The premise was very Season 1' ish for those of you dislike subsequent seasons of the show. Although Boone is absent in this one the story features Auger and Da'an heavily and Dr. Bellman makes a cameo as well which was a nice touch. I dont want to get into the details too heavily but Ill say that this would make a great episode of E:FC and leave it at that. There were a couple of inconsistancies but nothing important. Overall an excellent read and E:FC fans will enjoy it. I hope Heritage is half as good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read it even if you haven't seen the series!, August 24, 2001
By A Customer
I know zilch about the series Earth: Final Conflict, but I immensely enjoyed this book. It isn't at all confusing, and there's a lot of suspense, action, and fun. The main character, Cecilia, is a middle-aged teacher in Los Angeles. Her serene life is shattered to pieces when she receives an ominous summons to speak with a Taelon official (the Taelons are a race of highly advanced aliens who are quietly taking over Earth). Cecilia runs, seeking shelter from a resistance group to which one of her former students belongs. Cecilia doesn't like the Taelons, but when the rebels ask her to assassinate the Taelon leader Zo'or, she refuses--only to be locked up. Hours later she's sprung by Augur, a member of *another* resistance group, and they go on the run together. The plot quickly blossoms into complexity, with mysterious attacks, would-be assassins, sinister plots, and teenage hackers. This book is a romping adventure anyone can enjoy, and which I highly recommend. Buy it, read it, and then go check out some of Sherwood Smith's other books.
