Book Description

March 16, 2000 Earth: Final Conflict
When he lands among the warring clans of the Irish hills, the Taelon scientist Ma'el is immediately cast into mortal danger...until he meets a young Celtic warrior who will lay down his life for the mysterious this stranger, and a druid priestess with uncanny insight. Together with the alien, they set out on an incredible journey, around the planet and to a destiny greater than the humans can possibly imagine.

For Ma'el has come to judge Earth, and their travels will have consequences far into the future--consequences that will change both humanity and the Taelon race forever . . .

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The second novel tied to the TV series conceived by the late Gene Roddenberry continues, in the distant past, the saga about the alien Taelons begun by Fred Saberhagen in 1999's Earth: Final Conflict: The Arrival. Early in the fourth century, Ma'el, the first Taelon sent to Earth, teams up with Declan, a fugitive Irish prince, after Declan rescues the alien from bandits. Along with Ma'el's "apprentice" Sean (who turns out to be a young woman named Sinead), the two travel the world to recruit humans who can foresee the future--a mission with possibly tremendous consequences for the inhabitants of Earth. When Declan and Sinead fall in love, their combined visionary powers move Ma'el to reveal such secrets of Taelon technology as the operation of his spaceship. After Declan is appointed First Protector, the human charged with guarding the interests of the Taelon on Earth, he and Sinead return to Ireland, where they grow old and prosper. White's historical knowledge and medical expertise at times outweigh the SF elements of the plot. The entire novel is invested, however, with the literacy, compassion and gentle humor that has always distinguished the work of this author, who died last year and was best known for his Sector General series. Notable also is the care with which White portrays Declan and Sinead, making their ability to understand future technology more plausible than is usual in time-travel scenarios.

From Booklist

Before shuffling off his mortal coil (the remains of which are orbiting above us--really), TV producer Gene Roddenberry created a new series that ultimately may prove as important as Star Trek. In Earth: Final Conflict, the rather fay Taelons mean to destroy humanity--or maybe not, depending on which of the bald, watery-eyed, androgynous aliens you believe. The late Irish writer James White based this book on a series episode that revealed that the first Taelon, whose notes would convince his later kin to leave Earth in peace (or maybe not: EFC is nothing if not rife with ambiguity), had lived and died in Ireland. Threading Irish folklore, Taelon technology, a soupcon of sexual tension, and a hearty adventure together, White has created enjoyable entertainment, with some slack sections and flaccid text. Although those who don't already know what Taelons look like may find them hard to visualize from this book, EFC fans will surely be the bulk of the bunch gobbling it up, so that constitutes no major threat to its popularity. 5.0 out of 5 stars A true treasure, March 2, 2000

This book chronicles a part of the life of the ancient Taelon, Ma'el, as he lives in ancient Ireland. Also with him are the distant ancestors of William Boone, a Celtic warrior and a druidess, Declan and Sinead.

Ma'el is portrayed precisely how a Taelon should be, mysterious and yet I can see stirrings of understandable emotion in him, such as distaste for human violence. I wonder if Leni Parker's Da'an inspired White (sadly deceased) for Ma'el.

Declan is a great deal like Boone, my second favorite character in the book. Sinead seemed slightly less sympathetic to my eyes, but I thought that her glimpses of the future were intriguing, especially her last one. Overall, it gave a wonderful sense of continuity to the series, and gave life and spirit to Ma'el. The writing style was beautiful, almost poetic. You will not be disappointed by this book!

3.0 out of 5 stars A Mixed Bag, October 23, 2000
This review is from: Gene Roddenberry's Earth: Final Conflict--The First Protector (Hardcover)
I looked forward to this book with joy and trepidation. After the first EFC book being such a flop (in my opinion) I wondered what this one would bring. The first surprise was that the story was not of Boone,Lili and Da'an as the cover suggested but of the first Taelon Ma'el, who visited earth more than 1000 years in the past, which just goes to show you really can't judge a book by it's cover. While the story answered a number of my questions relating to the TV series (1st season), I found the story very slow moving. At times I had to force myself to continue. I also found a number of the chapters took us nowhere except that they were there. The relationship between Declan (the first protector) and Sinead was touching but the important parts later in their relationship were totally skimmed over. We receive insights into how Ma'el formed 'his' beliefs, the reasons behind 'his' warnings, and 'his' strong insistence that the Taelon Synod not proceed with their plan to come to earth. I found the ready acceptance of Ma'el's astounding technology by 'primitive' people a little hard to swallow. All in all an enjoyable tale although a little far fetched at times.

3.0 out of 5 stars Earth Final Conflict Prehistory, April 10, 2000
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Gene Roddenberry's Earth: Final Conflict--The First Protector (Hardcover)
The book is well written though not a page-turner. It does not dovetail much with the series and presents oddly little new information about Ma'el who is portrayed largely as an eager, if bungling scientist. The dynamic between Declan and Sinead is well done as are all the character portrayals and their interaction. The ambience created by the author is fresh and vivid.

As a piece of historic fiction, I found this piece very disappointing. It is poorly researched. The author portrays Ireland in 309 c.e. in a way it will not develop into for another 500 years, after Viking Colonization. A few examples, Irish names are used which do not enter the language until after the country is converted to Christianity (Sean, Seamus, Sinead), the portrayal of economic life dominated by the use of money instead of barter, the extent of international trade, roads, an understanding of germ theory and a city life long before there were any cities on the Island. This made me question other historical details after the scene moved to regions where I have less expertese such as Egypt and the silk highway in Central Asia
