THE most under-rated singer in country music history.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Gene Watson : Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Gene Watson has never gotten the publicity that he richly deserves. The man is simply great. He sings from the heart. He has the ability to really rip you up with a ballad. He can also sing great uptempo stuff. I've got to say that MAN!, can he belt out a note (not for show, but when the situation calls for it). He DEFINITELY will NEVER be played on those vapid country formats of today. Gene Watson has too much soul for today's country radio programmers, who are spineless clones, just like the songs and singers that they they put on their stations. To Gene, Merle, Willie, Waylon, Johnny, Lyle, David Allan Coe, Dwight, Possum, and others: It is a COMPLIMENT to you that you are not played on today's country radio stations. Today's radio program directors wouldn't know talent if it bit them on the foot.

The hits on this CD cover Gene's best work. Pick the Wildwood Flower is a great story told in the country way while my favourite Paper Rosie written by Dallas Harms has held my attention for as long as it's been released. I listen to it every day and sing it just as often. Farewell Party is one of those timeless classics that no one but Gene can call his own.

One of the greatest compliments a performer can receive is to have fellow performers want to rerecord his works. Alan Jackson recent tribute to Gene Watson and Farewell Party is just that. Alan does a fine job however, when Gene Watson sings a song you can close your eyes and be there. Making love in the hot afternoon..... I can feel the warm breeze off Bourbon street.

I love Gene Watson's voice! "Farewell Party" has got to be my all-time favorite. I agree it is too bad we don't hear more from him.

Any Gene Watson collection has to include his trademark song, "Farewell Party". The ending on that song still packs a wallop! I agree with the other reviewer that Gene has never gotten his due as a singer of the country song. The man has the most beautiful voice I've ever heard from a male singer in Country Music. The songs are beautiful as well, especially the ballads like "Nothing Sure Looked Good on You", "One Sided Conversation" and of course "Farewell Party". This is definitive Gene Watson and would that we could go back to music like this instead of the Bubble Gum they call country today. Sit back, close your eyes and enjoy!

This album (CD) is absolutely superb! It has his classic hits that, even after a number of years, remain just as great as they did when the were first released. Songs like "Love In A Hot Afternoon" and "Paper Roses" are destined to live forever! The album was received in excellent condition.

......collection of Gene Watson's work. This is the one CD that stays loaded in my car's player. It is Real country music, speaking to your heart as well as your ears, the kind of songs you'll remember long after they leave the current Top 50 list. Gene Watson's music is worth buying, now more than ever. It is country as it should be.
