Gene Watson Greatest Hits (MCA),
By Carole Rayson (Alberta, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Gene Watson - Greatest Hits [MCA] (Audio CD)
I enjoy every song on this album and, like many, feel Gene Watson is one of the most underrated country performers. His concerts are just wonderful and out of 25 albums I have of his, there is only six songs that I don't care for, and then only because I'm not a blues lover. He still does them well. I'd say the above is a pretty unbelievable percentage.

Collection Of MCA Hit Recordings(1981-1984),
By Boomertunes (Illinois USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Gene Watson - Greatest Hits [MCA] (Audio CD)
Universally acclaimed as one of the classic traditional country vocalists, Gene Watson has recorded a prolific body of work over the span of his career. The combination of his clear, smooth, expressive voice with well chosen material makes for some essential listening. This MCA CD release "Greatest Hits" is a straight reissue of the original 10 song LP release. Arranged in chronological order, these Top 40 country hit single releases are from the following five MCA albums: "Between This Time And The Next"(1981), "Old Loves Never Die"(1981), "This Dream's On Me"(1982), "Sometimes I Get Lucky"(1983), and "Little By Little"(1983). Although the material is not as diverse as that of his earlier Capitol work, several designated biggies are among the highlights-the #1 chart topper, "Fourteen Carat Mind", and the bouncy #2, "You're Out Doing What I'm Doing Without". However, the quieter, more subtle successes like "Maybe I Should Have Been Listening" or a rocking number like "Drinkin' My Way Back Home" are just as enjoyable. Noticeably absent is the final big hit for the label, "Got No Reason For Goin' Home"(#7), from the "Heartaches, Love & Stuff" LP. Gene Watson recorded his first hits on the Capitol label and went on to record other hits after his stint on MCA for Epic and Warner Brothers. These recordings are available in many combinations on various collections and anthologies.
