5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have, May 7, 2007

This is a must-have for the serious genealogist. For those just starting your family history, if you do not understand the importance of taking the time to document your sources, this will make a believer out of you. It helped me evaluate all the different bits of conflicting information I received through oral family tradition and my own research to help me decide just what information had the strongest case for being correct.

This review is from: Genealogical Proof Standard: Building a Solid Case (Paperback)
As a replacement for the dated "Preponderance of the Evidence", Christine Rose made the "Genealogical Proof Standard: Building a Solid Case" into a well-written, up-to-date reference pamphlet which explains in detail the "Five Step Process" that any good genealogist or family historian should adhere to when researching and weighing the "evidence". She explains how to build a case, weigh the records, and analyze the criteria, then how to sum it all up by writing a clear and solid conclusion. Her writing is down-to-earth, and she gives good examples of cases to analyze.

This book is a quick-read -- I read it all in one evening. I highly recommend that anyone who is seriously researching their family history to read -- and re-read, from time-to-time -- this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Genealogical Proof Standard, September 2, 2008
This review is from: Genealogical Proof Standard: Building a Solid Case (Paperback)
An excellent resource that places genealogical "proof" before the average genealogist. A relatively short book, but packed with solid information that helps assess indirect evidence and almost assures a solid conclusion. I highly recommend this book to all.

This book offers excellent and succinct, easy-to-understand tips for how to evaluate your family history records for their reliability, which I recently used in writing a family history narrative for a family line that contained many road-blocks. I recommend it highly.

This little book is a great help for a beginning genealogist. It has helped me to decide the quality of the records that I am finding at the beginning of my research. I hope that these practices will be "second nature" to me after the next 6 months, so that I feel secure in my research.
