Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Similar in format to Arends's earlier Genealogy Software Guide, this latest work surveys currently available CD-ROMs of interest to genealogists and local historians. Each entry lists the CD-ROM's title, publisher, price, system requirements, and a brief description of its contents. Icons mark those entries containing more detailed reviews. Titles are arranged by topics such as biographies, military records, state and international resources, and surname compilations. A publisher and vendor list and index complete the book. The author's descriptions are straightforward, and she does not hesitate to cite limitations. Arends also includes databases such as America: History and Life on Disc (ABC-CLIO) and The Complete Marquis Who's Who on CD-ROM (SilverPlatter), well out of most individuals' price range though often available at libraries and vital for thorough research. Any work dealing with electronic products quickly becomes dated, but having at hand the information found here helps users and buyers decide if certain CD-ROM products will meet their research needs. Arends is the editor of the electronic newsletter Online Pioneers and a reviewer for FamilyTreeMaker.com. Recommended for public libraries. (Illustrations not seen.)--Elaine M. Kuhn, Allen Cty.
