Book Description

May 2, 2011 080631205X 978-0806312057
In 1987 we published Laverne Galeener-Moore's Collecting Dead Relatives, the first book that looked on the comic side of genealogy. With Fonda Baselt's Sunny Side of Genealogy we offer another one, and the two books clearly demonstrate that genealogy is secure enough in its professionalism to laugh at itself. This edition of the Baselt book is the second, and it has sixteen pages of new material. The whole book is a humorous collection of anecdotes, poems, wills, epitaphs, and other miscellany from genealogy. A quote of just one item will convince you that you should have this entertaining work-- "Old genealogists never die/They just lose their census."

"This little book is filled with humorous selections about family trees, family roots, and family skeletons. . . . Just the book to make one lighthearted."--Genealogical Helper

People researching their ancestors tend to be obsessive and humorless. This book is full of nice little tags, as well as some longer bits, that treat this business with the humor that I, anyway, think should be brought to it. (If you're going to do it at all.)

A couple of samples, not in verse (some of them are), from the book:

GENEALOGY: Tracing yourself back to people better than you are.
-John Garland Pollard (whoever he was and whoever his descendents and ascendents were)

We adore titles and heredities in our hearts, and ridicule them with our mouths.
-Mark Twain (who would have called himself a mudcat)

It is of no consequence of what parents a man is born, so he be a man of merit.
-Horace (bet you don't know he was; clue: he spoke Latin, and his father was born a slave. Not one of YOUR ancestors, huh?)

3.0 out of 5 stars Short Sayings December 13, 2006
By Ann
This book is a series of short quotes, quips, and poems in a plain typeset that evoke the idea of a handout passed between friends. Its short length, and small pages mean a read of less than half an hour, if that.
