4.0 out of 5 stars Nice genny for the money
Works perfect, as I haven't had a power outage since I got it!

It was packed well, but for some reason the main control panel was "pushed in". I called Generac and they said to first check with the fright forwarder to file a damage claim. The issue was so minor (I bent the panel right back) that it wasn't worth the hassle. Also, there were some missing...

1.0 out of 5 stars Buyer's remorse, April 3, 2011

The customer relations at Generac are terrible. Their knee-jerk response is to blame you if you have a problem with your generator. The voltage regulator in my portable Generac (XG6500) failed twice after less than three hours of service. When I informed Generac of the problem, they said no way would they send a replacement. I told the "case coordinator" that my generator was wired into our house circuitry through an outside inlet leading to a transfer switch, and he said their portable generators aren't designed for that purpose and are only supposed to be used with ordinary extension cords! So why does it have a 4-pronged, 30 amp receptacle? It isn't just me who has issues with this company. At the very least, check out the Better Business Bureau web site in Wisconsin and ripoffreports.com, and see how many people have filed complaints with them about Generac's products and warranty. Their attitude is that you agreed to our crappy warranty when you bought it, so now you're stuck with it. They make you feel powerless. The one star rating is for the company, not this particular machine (mine is a different model). See my review of the XG6500 for the full story.

It was packed well, but for some reason the main control panel was "pushed in". I called Generac and they said to first check with the fright forwarder to file a damage claim. The issue was so minor (I bent the panel right back) that it wasn't worth the hassle. Also, there were some missing carriage bolts for the handles. Generac sent those right out without question. Starts well, runs smooth, not awful loud, but not a 'campsite' genny. I bought it to run refrigerators, freezers, furnace, and sump pumps during extended outtages. I could power a pump and 2 fridges, but never tried to tie in the furnace. I don't expect to run them all at the same time with this, but it does have the overhead peak wattage for some heavy start up surges. Nice buy for the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Generac 6500, October 10, 2010

Minor assembly required (wheels...handles...adding oil) but relatively easy to complete. Out of the box, generator started with a couple of pulls and runs very smoothly. A little on the loud side, but not atypical for a portable generator. Have tested generator by hooking up to our house transfer switch and transferring the to gen power. Worked flawlessly and easily ran gas furnace blower...well pump...2 refrigerators and a couple light circuits. Thus far...nice machine.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not buy Generac and do not buy online from Amazon, October 12, 2011

I bought a Generac XG8000E from Amazon in November of 2010. It arrived in pristine condition. I put in oil and gas and the thing started up instantly. It was a marvel to behold. Fast forward to August of 2011. Hurricane Irene hit and we lost power. I pulled the Generac out of my shed, hooked it up, through the transfer switch and...no power. I tested the unit and it didn't generate any electricity. I took to the local Generac dealer/service. Seven weeks, and a dozen phone calls later, I was told that I should have done a complete quality-control check of every feature of the generator when it first arrived. They would not repair it and I'd have to pay $450 for all the broken parts in the power box and windings. Generac put me on hold 10 minutes at a time, they hung up on me when transferring calls, they swapped customer service reps so I'd have to tell my story over and over. They were unresponsive, dismissive and have a condescending attitude toward their customers. And I can't say with certainly but it seems that Amazon.com likely damaged this generator in their Arizona warehouse and then repackaged it so as to hide the internal damage.

If I thought you were considering purchasing a Generac, and purchasing it from Amazon, I would drive to your house and slap you in the face and ask you if you're really that stupid. I've never been more disappointed, enraged and defrauded by a company before. I am considering small claims court. Don't do it. Buy from a local power tool company who can do QC and get it set up for you BEFORE you take possession of it. And for heaven's sake - don't buy a Generac.

The generator started up right away and using my transfer switch I confirmed we'll be in great shape with any power loss. We lost power for 5 days in the Spring and I now feel confident we're in fine shape if/when that happens again.

I trust the name brand, and plan on keeping up with the maintenance. My wife can start it, easily!

It's not for the job site, but looks like it could survive in one, the wheels seem somewhat cheap, but strong enough.

Overall excellent. I bought it and set it up and needed it the next day, amazing timing.

You will need to get a grounding cable to ground the chassis, which is nothing, but something I didn't know when I bought it.

STrong product. Buy it. You'll feel invincible. :)

Easy to put together. starts right up. Used it for two storms one 7 days without power one without for 1 day. Nothing like seeing the neighborhood without power and you got the lights on, heat, TV, cold food and piece of mind. Very well built but the proof is in years of service, time will tell.

I can't say enough good thigs about my dealings with Amazon, I purchased a Generac 5623 8000 watt generator this past Monday the 31st after a freak snow storm left our area without power. I ordered it Monday morning and it was delivered Wednesday at 1:30 right to my front door, within minutes it was in place working. The transfer switch I also ordered was delivered Tuesday afternoon. The generator is working fine with no problems, I have powered my oil fired furnace, oil fired hot water, well, refrigerator and family room with no issues.
