Generac 20K Home Generator,
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Generac Guardian Series 5744 20,000 Watt Air Cooled Propane/Natural Gas Powered Home Automatic Standby Generator With Transfer Switch (CARB Compliant) (Lawn & Patio)
We haven't had this item very long; however, the ordering experience from Amazon.com went very smooth and the installation went without any problems. The test phase following installation went without incident and the unit fired up on the scheduled date. We hired a contractor to perform the installation for $2700.00 and I watched every step. I would recommend going the contractor route unless you are a professional electrican. I have repaired home electrical appliances, wired new buildings, etc, but I do not consider myself qualified to install this unit.
The only problem was: The shipping container was too flimzy to contain such a heavy item and most of it had been mutilated by the time it was delivered. I am surprised that the unit arrived un damaged with the only missing item being one piece of the bottom facia plastic trim, which was replaced by Generac.

I ordered this unit from Electric Generators Direct because at the time they were $500 cheaper than Amazon. This is no longer true. I received the unit in just a few days. I installed the unit and the transfer switch myself without too much difficulty. The entire installation took about 30 hours. There was only one problem with the unit. The transfer switch had a couple of loose connections that could have caused a big problem if not noticed. The transfer switch was humming and I had no power to one phase at my breaker box. When I opened the transfer switch I could hear and see arching. I shut off power to the transfer switch and found two nuts were very loose. I tightened them and ran the start-up tests and everything went great. That was in October 2009. The generator comes on to exercise once a week and has actually carried load for a couple of hours during an intermittent power outage. It was a good purchase and I am happy with it. I do recommend checking all connections including factory connections to make sure they are tight as you install the unit.
