How Inverter Technology Works

Inverter generators utilize a different type of alternator than standard generators to generate AC power. The raw power produced is converted from DC to AC power by a computer controlled inverter module. The engine speed varies depending on the electrical demand, which significantly reduces noise and fuel consumption compared to a standard portable. The end result is a portable generator with reduced weight and size and power that is ultra-clean, capable of safely powering sensitive electronics.

Lightweight and Compact

The iX Series is up to 40% lighter than a standard generator of equal watts. And the built-in handle makes it easy to move with minimal effort.

FlexPower™ Operation Modes

Use high mode for large loads or battery charging, or eco mode to save fuel and reduce sound levels even more.

From the Manufacturer

Generac's iX Series inverter technology takes the raw power produced by the generator and passes it through a special electronic microprocessor to provide clean and stable power, safe for computers and other sensitive electronic devices. Designed for life on the road, its durable, lightweight, compact design with built-in handle offers portable power for camping, tailgating, and recreational use. Inverter generators utilize a different type of alternator than standard generators to generate AC power. The raw power produced by the generator is converted into AC power by a digital inverter module. The inverter technology reduces the generator's size and weight. But more importantly, it allows the engine to run at varying speeds, significantly reducing noise and fuel consumption levels. The Generac iX Series has clean consistent output power with less than 3% total harmonic distortion especially important with sensitive electronic devices such as computers and DVD players.

This is JUNK, save up a few more bucks and buy a Honda or Yamaha and have something dependable.

I told him my situation and he said I would have to bring the unit to an authorized dealer for the warranty repair.

When in economy mode, the engine doesn't like to run at a constant speed, even with a constant load attached.

All I have recently received a Generac IX 2000 inverter generator. It was received as a replacement for my honeywell 2000i which was very hard starting (20-40 pulls).

First impressions:
The Generac was much lighter than the honeywell (about 10lbs lighter) It also looks a little better in my opinion. The build quality is also nicer, the plastic is definitely a bit thicker.

I have done some initial break in runs at no load or very light load. My thoughts on these were, its spectacular! It starts right away and is definitely quieter than the honeywell. I have a dB meter.

Sound level:
These readings were taken in my back yard, both generators at the same location and orientation. Ambient noise level is about 50 dB. Readings were taken 1m away from the generator at level with it while they were unloaded. These comparisons are IRRELEVANT to other measurements as the surroundings and measurement distances are likely different.

So the generac is much quieter! its very noticeably quieter!

BUT THERE IS TERRIBLE PERFORMANCE

Load testing:
So I now went to load testing. I used 2 different electric heaters, so there were no startup surge loads. One was a ceramic heater that pulled 750 watts and a oil filled electric radiator that had 3 settings, I used the settings for 790 watts and 1490 watts (approx).

If you read the other reviews, you will notice that there is definitely an issue with the choke lever. After I received this generator, there was also an issue with the choke lever being broken off right out of the box. This is a nice little generator and I personally think Generac is a good brand. I have had no negative issues with the company or it's products in the past but this is certainly a KNOWN issue by now. Generac and Amazon obviously know about this choke lever problem. I think whoever buys this product on Amazon should be fairly warned before they purchase it. It can be fixed by contacting Generac or going through a local authorized dealer to repair it but this is an inconvenience and can take a substantial amount of time. If you are buying this product with plans of using it right away, I wouldn't count on it. I also think it is wrong to keep selling an item that has been proven to be defective as a brand new item. I haven't had my generator fixed yet, it is currently sitting at a local repair shop.

Follow up - August 23rd, 2010:

Generac finally replaced my leaking unit. Hours of work on my part. The new unit idles quite different. On normal mode it idles significantly lower and flucuates up and down. In the economy mode, it simply idles even lower. The first unit seemed to idle normal (who knows) or high. In economy mode it flucuated up and down as stated in the manual. The electrical outlets are different. The first unit had commercial 120v outlets - one plug vertical, one horizontal. I spent $50 for a commercial extension cord. The new unit has regular (parallel) plugs. Therefore I'll need to buy an adaptor. Unbelievable. If there are any more problems I simply will pay someone who knows what they are doing (Generac's service people do not) or throw the unit out. Stay away from this unit. And stay away from Generac.

June, 2010 - Unit was defective out of box. Significant oil leak from engine even when not running. Took to 2 authorized Generac service shops. Still leaks. Leak is where 2 aluminum machine surfaces come together. Still trying to get resolution. Generac customer service fair at best. Takes considerable time to reach a human being. The unit already looks 2 years old due to the handling by the repair people and I've never used it. Generac has still not offered to replace. They "don't make the motors". A great excuse. I will contact Amazon corporate office if necessary to tell them not to sell this company's products and file in small claims court if necessary against Generac. Please consider other manufacturers' if you are looking for a small generator. I may be contacted at nfre at comcast dot net for photos of leak. Thank you.

Where to begin... I decided to purchase this product based on the Good Housekeeping seal and after comparing this price level of inverter generator against others. Generac cannot be compared to the Honda line of generators. Honda is the king and if you want the best, plan on spending double or more of what you will pay for this unit.

I ordered my ix1600 and it arrived in the usual lightning fast order from Amazon. The generator came in a very sturdy and attractive box from Generac. The generator was very well packed and nothing looked out of order or beaten up once I looked inside. The unit is not shipped with oil so you must take care in adding the proper amount, which is supplied with your new purchase. I then added gas and even cracked open the owners manual to make sure I wasn't missing anything.

I then executed the sequence to start my new generator, and...nothing. Not even a sputter. I pulled out the spark plug as I thought I may have flooded it. Cleaned and dried everything off and tried it again. Nothing. I pulled the plug again, cleaned and dried it and then removed the air filter. I used a shot of ether right into the carb and still had no luck. All in all I spent well over an hour trying to get it going.

12-01-10 - I tried to register the generator online but their website would not accept it as there was some technical error. I called Generac and had a representative enter it for me. I told him my situation and he said I would have to bring the unit to an authorized dealer for the warranty repair. Lucky for me the dealer is close by and they do excellent work. I brought the unit to them and explained the problem. They tried a couple quick things but could not get it to fire. They said they would get back to me.
