Called Generac, they told me to call a local dealer.

As others have mentioned, the unit is kind of loud, especially considering the size of the engine.

If I get it open hopefully the local locksmith can match up the locks.

My unit was installed last week. It took 3 days to install and troubleshoot, including pouring a concrete pad and running cable under my house. Admittedly, my contractor had never worked with this unit. Still it seems like it should have been easier. My dad also bought one and it took his installer (a dealer) a day and the site was much easier.

My biggest gripe is that this thing is LOUD. My neighbor has already complained. If you buy this, make sure you put it in the place least likely to annoy the neighbors. Also note that this runs every week for 12 minutes to test itself. That's 52 opportunities to annoy your neighbor(s) - and possibly yourself. You can set the run time, but don't make the mistake my contractor did. He entered 3:00 as the time (as an example) when he should have entered 15:00. So it was 12 hours off and did it's test at 3:30 in the morning. That's when the neighbor complained. I don't blame them. I would have complained too.

This puppy is basically a motorcycle engine in a box. I don't know why Generac can't muffle it better. As I note in the title of this review: I hope it works well. Installation and tweaking was hard.

As others have mentioned, the unit is kind of loud, especially considering the size of the engine. I bought this unit from a private party who found out, too late, that he couldn't install it - per code - at his home. It was never connected and had never run; it was essentially brand new.
I got it installed at my remote cabin (it was already out of warranty, so using it as a back-up for my off-grid system could do no worse) after obtaining the appropriate gas plumbing. The unit was a little tough starting, but did so after three attempts. It ran, pretty much without problems, for about 145 hours over 3 months. Then it started becoming more and more difficult to start, eventually refusing to start at all.
I spoke with a Generac repairman, with whom I'm acquainted, and he had me do a valve adjustment. After the valves were adjusted, checked and triple checked, it started up - albeit on the second attempt - but ran a little rough. It smoothed out and then ran for a little over an hour when it abruptly stopped. Forensic investigation revealed the exhaust valve had broken and the head of it was loose in the combustion chamber. I'm pretty sure the engine is toast… and because it was out of warranty when I bought it, I'm up the proverbial small water way without the necessary propulsion device.
I'm not terribly impressed with the Generac engine and their proprietary electronics used to control said engine. The same things could be achieved with a simpler set-up, but then Generac couldn't charge an arm and a leg for parts. Sorry! This one is a no-go.

Purchased the 8KW Unit with a transfer switch. The unit arrived damaged-the front panel was dented and GENERAC sticker was destroyed. Reseller told me that they had ordered the replacement part to be sent in a few days. Once the generator was installed it started for about 1 minute, and that was it. It now continues to go through the setup, says the battery is low, evethough put TWO brand new batteries in the unit, and tested each battery at 12.55 volts. Called Generac, they told me to call a local dealer. Called local dealer, they wouldn't service the unit because they didnt sell it. Called another dealer recommended by Generac, that dealer told me they could come look at the unit for the non start issue but the charge would be $125, this is on a three day old generator. Called GENERAC back, they said to check the battery and the fuse on the control panel. No help then told me to call the a dealer. Next dealer told me because they didn't install the generator, they would have to charge me $2000 to reinstall it.
Bottom line is don't waste your money on this garbage, Out of the box, it didn't work, and literally no one can help. Not the manufacturer or the dealers. I am out almost $3000, called reseller told them to come and pick it up.
These machines are extremely low quality, and the "dealers" are nothing more than electricians who have passed a Generac questionaire. Worse consumer experience for a product in this price range I have ever had. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON GENERAC PRODUCTS.

A great generator for home standby. The Generac 6237 is ideal for those who want a home standby generator for backing up those circuits that you need the most during a power outage. I backup my refrigerator, freezer, lights (compact fluorescents) furnace (natural gas). When the power goes off, what I need the most comes back on. Don't expect this model to power your entire home, but only those appliances you need the most. This generator is solidly built, and is much quieter than a portable generator, I would say it is only slightly louder than the average central air conditioner unit. There was an update (covered under warranty) to solve a cold start issue, but that was taken care of quickly by my local Generac technician, newer manufactured units will have this update in place. I no longer have to go out into the cold to refuel a portable generator and with the price of gasoline these days, it is less expensive to operate. I don't understand the negative reviews this unit has gotten, it has been a solid performer.
