There are many possible causes for any Generator or air cooled engine not to start in cold weather. In the case of natural or LP gas it is very important to have the correct size gas line to the unit. You must have 3/4" black iron pipe up to the 1/2" flexible connection that feed the generator. In many cases the generator is connected into any existing gas piping system. All of the existing demand of the system has to be taken in to account along with new generator, to make sure that the entire gas piping system is properly sized. In some cases a larger gas meter may have to be installed. Another cause may be the battery. In cold weater any battery will only be at half power during the start mode. If the gas pressure is not right, the unit may not start on the first try. The battery could be moved into a warm area, basement or warm room adjacent to the generator. These are a few tips that can help with starting any air cooled engine in cold weather.

I purchased this model 3 months ago. After 2 major snowstorms and a couple minor ones I haven't lost power long enough to actually make use of it. But it is set to run on a regular schedule, weekly at noon for approx. 12 min, and it's always started and run without a problem. It was rated very highly by Consumer Reports and they found it to be one of the most efficient units.

If you're having starting problems it's probably a connection or service problem. If you're having it serviced call a different generator company. If you're not then call one and a plumber to check out the gas connections. Also, make sure you keep the unit clear of snow. The exhaust and intake vents have to be clear in order for it to start and run.

I've had this generator for 5 months. It's a new model. There have been starting problems that have not been resolved. It won't start on the first try, but will start on the second or third try if you manually do it yourself. What good does that do when you're not home, the power goes out and your heat goes off? I wish I had purchased a different brand.

WARNING! Do not buy ANY of these machines unless your gas meter is 20 feet or closer to your intended outside location! You also need to use at least 1" inner diameter pipe and may need to run a new pipe, and also install a new meter. Read the spec sheets, get them athttp://www.electricgeneratorsdirect.com/stories/36-How-to-Pick-the-Perfect-Home-Standby-Generator.html, before buying. I am sure these are fine products, but I am glad I kept asking questions and avoided buying--my meter is a good 60 feet from where I could place this behind my house. Also know that these consume a lot of gas, about equal to running your furnace continually, which of course is OK for a short time. I gave a one star only to get your attention and perhaps save you a lot of grief!
