Considered all options when the time came to buy a whole house standby generator. After reading several reviews, a lot of the poor reviews of the product came down to bad installation. Looking beyond this, the Generac product is quite robust, and now having the newest 22KW unit installed (correctly!), the unit runs beautifully.

It is well made, and has a proven engine performance and reliability. We also have the SmartLink which keeps a constant watch on the generator and notifies when there is a problem (which there hasn't been). This Link notifies when the unit is in test mode and when it shuts off. This data is also transmitted to our installer who can respond if there ever is a problem. That is a nice feature.

We did think about going all-hog and getting the liquid cooled unit, and living in the Gulf South we are subjected to power outages during really bad storms. However, putting pen to paper, the 22KW unit made more sense for the actual amount of outages that we have. I can afford to replace the engine/generator assembly completely again before I reach the cost of the liquid cooled version. It made more sense to go with the Air Cooled Unit.

As far as operation...this unit runs our ENTIRE HOUSE...and we have three AC units (2.5T, 5T and a Mini-Split 1.2T)...plus all the lights (we upgraded to LED bulbs). No issues at all!

We highly recommend this unit! A+++++

We purchased this Generac 22Kw generator in July 2015. After seven weeks of the five minute test each week it fell apart. Literally, shards of magnetic metal and plastic all over and through the machine. With less than 40 minutes of run time, installed by an authorized dealer, our brand new, anticipated source of peace of mind which we paid $10,000 was useless. Generac's solution was to send out three major replacement pieces and call it good. The authorized repair man told us that this failure was "catastrophic" and that he had never seen a problem like this. He had also never repaired a problem like this! So, we essentially buy a new generator and get a rebuilt one instead. Field rebuilt, not even at the factory with inspections and quality control. That is not what I call value for the dollar, customer service or peace of mind. I am very saddened with the Generac attitude as much as anything. Their reaction on the phone was condescending and dismissive. Simply, rebuilt was good enough for them and we were expected to accept that. For a company that says they sell "peace of mind" they did not come through with any.

Generac has come a long ways, hats off to them for staying with it and the US. Mine is an outstanding example of sate of the art, direct drive, 10 year warranty from start up, 2 years between maintenance. I am very pleased with the purchase.

This should come with a disclaimer from the manufacturer that the generator is designed for use with a Generac-brand transfer switch. Customer support will not assist with questions dealing with a non-Generac transfer switch. Customer support very difficult and limited. I researched this product extensively before purchasing and it would have been very helpful for the Generac to have directly stated that installation with another ATS will not be supported.

I have most of the vacation house on the system, I have the gas only model for the full time home. I bought this unit primarily because winter ice issue to deal with almost every year. Prior to getting the generator, I have had varying degrees of sucess with portable generators, with a few times our generator did not even start, and the amount of anxiety wondering what the power out game plan was going to look like in action.

As far as installation goes, most electricians are going to charge anywhere from $500 to $1000 for transfer box, and then the plumber to hook up the gas line. Gas has to be ran to the unit, so unless you have an existing gas line already in place, the plumber has to lay pipe and your natural gas. Total cost for install was just under $1500.

The unit looks great, self tests every week, and providing I maintain the unit, it should last many years

Since it is powered by natural gas, it is relatively quiet to the gasoline powered generators in the neighborhood. It was trouble free and gave very even output no matter what the load was on the unit with its 20 circuits. For a 2500 square foot home, including the hot tub equipment, it powers about 80% of the devices (lights, water pump, heat pump, electronics / tv / satellite ) and makes staying in the home easy while my neighbors either went to hotels or struggled with their portables, refilling their tanks every 6 to 12 hours of use.

I did not buy them at the same time. I wanted to make sure the first one would work reliably before getting another one. So far so good.

It's time for a review. I bought the 8kw unit from HD for our cottage in Canada. A couple of weeks after installation we headed to Florida for the Fall, then back at Christmas to find that a) it wouldn't start; b) it had used up a year's supply of propane, perhaps $1,500 CAD as it ran and ran and ran. Apparently a fuse blew when the cold weather kit kicked in and the unit thought that the power was out. Since the cottage was buried in snow at that point, it didn't make any sense to get someone out to figure out what was wrong.

Skip forward to May - contacted Generac and found a service shop (not the installation shop) that would come out. It wasn't until July that we saw someone as we are remote and he immediately knew that the motor was blown. By September I had a new motor and was about to leave for Florida again.

In the meantime I'd been in contact with Generac about the propane usage as well as getting some sort of warranty on the relatively new unit. Once we were in Florida, they said that they wanted a service guy to come out and read the log so that they could estimate the propane usage ... but of course the place was closed up at that point and the unit locked.

Well, here we are again, Christmas in Canada and guess what, the entries in question are now past the end of the run log. What now ? It's a year since I paid for a year's worth of propane (we fill the huge tank once per year) to replenish what was used by the faulty equipment. The unit is also saying "battery problem" so there's probably an issue with the charging circuit.

Will I ever get any satisfaction out of Generac ? Who knows. Perhaps I should have been dealing with HD who sold me the equipment in the first place instead of being Mr.
