Praise for books in the CHERUB series: 'Punchy, exciting, glamorous and, what's more, you'll completely wish it was true.' -- The Sunday Express 'An excellent start to a promising series. It is every boy's wish to be a spy, and this book will enthrall every single one of them.' -- The Bookseller 'An exciting, swiftly moving tale' -- School Librarian 'A fast-paced action thriller, which should turn into a fantastic series - if James manages to live that long.' -- Young Post

5.0 out of 5 stars The General, March 17, 2010

The General
By Robert Muchamore Hodder Children's Books pp. 329 $10.94 isbn.978-0-340-93184-4
Foster Shelton, 7th Grade, Cuthbertson Middle School, Waxhaw, North Carolina

After everything goes wrong on a mission, "He needed a victory to get his life back on track." (281). So when Lauren mentions an urban warfare training exercise against the American soldiers, James couldn't say yes faster. Too bad it doesn't turn out so fun. But right during the middle of the training exercise, he gets captured and tortured but not without having a word: "We've got rules here! You can arrest and interrogate me, but you can't use force." (249). While James is facing torture, there are also high speed chases, and some illegal activity you won't believe.
The setting of this story is a military base in the middle of Nevada, USA. To James this was just a way to get out of class and have fun after a mission goes horribly wrong, but this little expedition led to a much bigger adventure.
The main antagonist of this novel is General Norman Shirley, who was on the American side of the training exercise. His main goal was to win this training exercise but he had no idea what was in store for him.
The main theme of this story is Redemption. For example: when he found out Dana was cheating on him and his mission blows up in his face he felt like he had to redeem himself by winning at something.
The reason Robert Muchamore probably writes about spy books is, "he worked as a private investigator up until 2005." He writes for young adults, such as fifth graders to eighth graders. He started the CHERUB series because his nephews' had complained that they had nothing for them to read. So he started this series and it has won the Red House Children's Book Award 2005 in the Older Readers Category for the first book The Recruit.
I recommend this book for anyone and everyone because it deals with everything a teenager would have to go through and more. This has got to be the best book of this series and the best book in the world. I actually liked reading it.

My son, age 12, had to read 12 books this summer to earn a monetary incentive...and he bought a few of the Cherub series to get started, eventually getting all of them. Some nights he would skip TV so he could be reading one of this series instead...that's how engrossing he found these books. If it gets him to read more- I'm all for it. By the way, now he's reading more for fun- not just because we incentivized him.
