Product Description

Great tool to have when you don't have enough swing room to use a full size tubing cutter. You can cut copper tubing with less than 1'' of clearance. Quicker than conventional cutters. Just snap it on the tube, close the gate and turn it in either direction. The cutter wheel automatically tightens as you turn the autocut, no knobs to twist. The cutter wheel is spring loaded to provide a constant cutting pressure. Long lasting hardened steel cutting wheels. Refer to model

I've been using these cutters (in 1/2" and 3/4" sizes) for several years. They're uniquely adept at their intended task-cutting tubing in confined spaces- but there are several drawbacks.

First, in spite of the manufacturer's claim, they only work well in one direction. If rotated the "wrong" way, they tend to pop open. This is easily overcome by remembering which way they work best.

Second, since the cutter wheel is held against the tubing rather forcibly by the spring, if the tubing is allowed to move when the cut is completed (a painfully common occurrence), it will break a chip out of the cutter wheel -- this fact is mentioned in the product instructions, but not it's inevitability. It is still possible to use the cutter with a chipped wheel (since the cutter wheel is smaller than the tubing and the chip(s) will not hit the same spot on the tubing as the cutter is turned), but it becomes increasing difficult as the number of chips increases. Eventually, you will feel compelled to replace the cutter wheel, which brings up:

Third, changing the cutter wheel is a daunting task. I am a professional mechanic with access to a large array of tools and the first time I changed one of these cutter wheels it took me about an hour and a lot of head scratching. The wheel is held in place by a pin that must be pressed out, then pressed back in. It would be relatively easy with an arbor press but unfortunately that is not included in my "large array." (I use a bench vise and a pin punch as a makeshift press.)

In spite of these not-insignificant drawbacks, I still consider these cutters as an essential part of my tool inventory. But I only use them when nothing else will do.

This cutter is really designed for tight spaces and can be a real lifesaver. For years while working as a plumber I found it more handy to use than the large conventional cutters. Naturally, it has drawbacks, but they aren't huge. That is why I give it 4 stars.

Pro's: Simple to use. Clamp on and twist (trick, follow the arrow for at least a turn, then try reversing a bit, then going forward a turn, reversing a bit... etc. It works faster with less burs)
Lightweight
Good grip (when dry)
Strong/Well built (I have many that are over 10 years old)
Fast (When used with my technique, I can cut copper pipe in a few seconds, much faster than other cutters)

Con's: Hard to change the blades out (but not impossible, and the blades are very cheap to buy)
When wet, they are hard to start at times.
Cuts are not always without burs. (you still must debur, sand, etc...)

Overall, if you do a lot of copper work, whether plumbing, or hvac, you need these tools. Be aware, they are not adjustable, so if you are cutting specialty copper, these will take a while. I don't recommend for extra thick copper or "soft/rolled" copper.

I will continue to recommend and if needed, buy more in the future. Auto-cuts have a definite advantage over other knockoffs that feature an open design. They just aren't as good at staying put and slip off, which is dangerous.

This tubing cutter works great. An autocut, you just close it and start turning. We have several technicians that won't use anything else.

The cutting wheel is so loose the it walks on the copper pipe. I have a small ridged that is twenty years old that works better. I thought it was a good design

First experience with this thing bought new at HD. Using in the direction of the arrow on tha side I managed to get 1 cut done after a lot of effort. Fortunately a 1/2 inch of ruined pipe was not on the side of the cut I needed. Attempt at getting a single groove clean cut ruined another 4" of pipe. Pipe is 1/2" rigid copper pipe with red ink 5' long THAT MEASURED 7" SHORT when I checked it right after I got home.
IS THERE A MAGIC WAY TO GET THIS OR ANY PIPE CUTTER TO WORK WHEN IT SPIRALS DOWN THE PIPE OR DID HD BITE ME ON THIS $18 ITEM AS WELL AS THE SHORT PIPE and the 1-1/4" pipe $13 galvanized steel floor flange.

This little pipe cutter let me cut some copper pipe in extremely close quarters and the cuts were clean. Easy to use, the cutter shows the proper rotation direction on the cutter body. In one place that was particularly difficult for me to reach I used the optional ratchet handle to make access easier. Best copper pipe cutter I have ever used.

I like its small and compact size. It makes it easier to get in tight spots to cut your pipe.

works especially well in tight places where the tu;rning radius of a regular tube cutter makes it hard to use and a cut time consuming.
