My General Pipe R25SM has lasted more than 10 years and handled many unclogging jobs around the house. I also tried the Rigid and Cobra plastic drum augers because I was attracted by the drill attachment feature. What a mistake that was to buy the Rigid and Cobra. I had to throw away both of those because they were built so cheap, either the plastic melted (Rigid, while attempting to use the drill at low speed) or the cable kinked to easily (Cobra, super cheap import quality). Now I'm sticking with my trusty General Pipe R25SM. This one has a metal drum. Not visible in the product photo because of the sticker - the back has an open design so you can squirt WD40 inside to keep the cable clean for storage. If you check the plumbers forums the pros also recommend General Pipe for drain clearing equipment.

Last time my shower drain got clogged and water started building up while taking a shower. It got so bad it would turn into a lake within a couple minutes of turning on the shower. It was horrid. Paid about $150 for a guy to come out and snake the drain.

After seeing how easy it was I wondered about buying a snake myself. I was a fool for not looking earlier, this is so easy to do. It is not the cleanest job because when you pull out whatever is in the drain (i.e. hair, bacteria, buildup of soap, and many other mysterious things) then you will see why it is somewhat nasty but not too horridly gross. If it saved me over $100 bucks and only takes about 10 minutes, then Yes it is more than worth it to buy this handy thing.

Two thumbs up! Worked very quickly and worked like a charm.

Tip: If you want to do it much faster have one person spinning the turny knob on top and holding the snake itself, while the other person pulls the snake and extends it further and further as well as retracts the snake and pulls the gunk and stuff off of it. It is much faster with 2 people.

What can I say about a tool designed to unclog drains? It's awesome. Though, figuring out how to use it at first was a little challenging. But once I did, it worked as intended. And, I save hundreds of thousands of dollars by not having to buy drain cleaners (a slight exaggeration, but at least I'm saving money!).

Only thing I didn't like was how you have to pull the cable back in. You quite literally have to pull the cable with hand. That turny mechanism on the back has one job: To turn the cable after it has been pushed in the drain. This creates a corkscrew effect, pulling into it's springy end all the nasties. I was hoping this would wind the cable back in, but nope. So, when you have to pull the cable back, you're touching the same cable that went into the drain. Yuck. (yes, it's wise to use gloves)

Otherwise, it's perfect for my needs. And is safer for the environment than chemicals in your pipes. And if you don't want to mess with dirty drains, pay a plumber. I prefer saving money and doing it myself though.

Been fighting a slow draining kitchen sink for years in a 60 year old home. Replaced the sink the and re-did the poorly made trap while I was at it and still had issues. A couple weeks ago a little bit of grease clogged it up good and solid due to the cold weather. I tried everything I could think of, including the nasty chemicals and plunging. I ended up weakening my sink basket seal, forcing me to replace it before I gave up and started looking for a better solution (which does not involve some stranger in my house). I discovered several videos on youtube using similar augers and I almost ran to the nearest big orange store to buy a plastic one.

I'm glad I waited. This tool is heavily made, and even if you've never used one before, it's easy to use. (don't just force the cable down the drain, you got to spin it in, saves on elbow grease) I have a weird drain pipe layout, and it very easily went the wrong way, but when I got it headed in the right direction and against the clog, I just gave it a spin and then a little tug and the standing water went rushing down the pipe. I worked it a little bit to break it up as much as possible before putting everything back together and running a bunch of hot water and dish soap down the drain. It came back up covered in grease - don't forget gloves, that stuff was nasty.

Shocking how quickly this tool worked, glad to have it as a part of my tool kit for future use. Don't hesitate, it's worth it.

Our shower would have about an inch of standing water in it, I didn't want to dump chemicals down the drain only to have them remain in the pipes for the next shower along with the clog. After I got the drain cover off and started to slide the pipe cleaner in, gave it a few spins and pulled out the most disgusting, foul smelling ball of hair/sludge/death. After I finished gagging and disposed of the previously described ball of funk, I ran the shower for a few minutes and the water quickly vanished down the drain. The General Pipe Cleaner did its job and its ready to do it again, just not sure if I'm battle hardened to do it again myself.

It definitely cleaned the drain and was easy to use. I used for indoor shower and it took about 15 minutes once I started. The price for a plumber is $60/hr I did it for a little over $20... Plus I can use the next time.
