About the Author

Brian Edman has been involved in construction for more than half his life. He started as a young man helping his uncle with concrete. As the years went on, he dabbled in everything from landscaping to carpentry. A number of years ago, he went into business with his father and brother general contracting homes. He quickly learned that the real money was not in swinging a hammer, but in being the boss of the guys who swing the hammers, hand the drywall, or shingle the roof. Throughout the years, Brian has learned many tricks of the trade to make the building process run smoothly while at the same time saving a lot of money. Brian is a full-time firefighter and still manages to build numerous homes each year using the techniques he has learned through the years.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a help!, May 15, 2005

I was thinking about building my own home instead of buying one but I was a bit scared of what is involved. After reading this book I am certain I will be able to handle it. I love the way it is laid out and reads like your friend is talking to you. After reading this book I really am going to be able to build a much better house for the same money I was planning on spending. My hat is off to this book. If your planning on building or even just thinking about maybe building this book is well worth the money.

When my husband and I decided we wanted to move I really wanted to build a new house. I was told, by him, that if I wanted a new house I was going to be the one building it. Well, I surprised him when I started researching the process and found this book along the way. I have already read the book twice and since then bought land, started the loan process with the bank and started contacting subcontractors. I have to say that this book is very easy to read and understand. We are both really shocked how easy this is. I would just like to tell everyone that if you are looking to build, then this book is a must.

5.0 out of 5 stars Straightforward, accessible resource, August 18, 2011

I'm giving this book 5 stars in spite of the Horrible editing (seriously--Horrible). I figure, I don't need this guy to teach me grammar, I need him to tell me how to general contract my home, and he does that. Very well.

The book walks you through each subcontractor you will need to hire, and issues to be aware of with each. There are also sections on choosing a lot, and financing the home. I found useful information on nearly every page.
