4.0 out of 5 stars I like it.
This TV has a nice shape and a nice picture. The remote control is nicely designed with big buttons in several colors. I've only used it with a VCR so I don't know about the commercial skip feature that is advertised.

One oddity: pressing the channel advance buttons (forward or backward) cycles the TV through channels 1 to 13. So if you're using an antenna instead...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good television, but word of caution before buying.
Four years ago my sister and I each bought this television for our respective kitchens. Almost to the same day, about six months ago, both sets demonstrated the same problem: the plug has to be pulled from the socket for the on-off switch to work. Everything but the on-off switch is fine. Since I paid slightly more than the advertised price here, to pay at least $75...

4.0 out of 5 stars I like it., October 27, 1999

This TV has a nice shape and a nice picture. The remote control is nicely designed with big buttons in several colors. I've only used it with a VCR so I don't know about the commercial skip feature that is advertised.

One oddity: pressing the channel advance buttons (forward or backward) cycles the TV through channels 1 to 13. So if you're using an antenna instead of a cable hook-up and you want to step through higher channel numbers then you'll have to enter the digits for each channel by hand. A slight inconvenience, too, is that you must type in a zero first to enter numbers under ten. (Pressing a "7" to get channel seven won't work here.)

It comes with an very sturdy pair of rabbit ear antennas (useless where *I* live but I suppose they work quite well elsewhere). An adaptor is provided for connecting the antenna to the cable-jack input (which is the only input on the TV). Be careful when you attach this adaptor: the orientation of it has to be just right or it won't fit, and the pin in the adaptor looks a little flimsy. Press smoothly and very firmly to fit it on.

The channel number is displayed, on screen when you want it, with pastel-colored, soft-edged numbers. Everything worked right out of the box (batteries included).

This one's a keeper; I definitely like the picture quality and also the appearance of the set itself. It's much better than my VCR deserves, in fact. If it wasn't for the channel selection quirks I'd probably give it five stars.

Almost to the same day, about six months ago, both sets demonstrated the same problem: the plug has to be pulled from the socket for the on-off switch to work. Everything but the on-off switch is fine. Since I paid slightly more than the advertised price here, to pay at least $75 for repair (minimum labor and bench fee) doesn't make sense. For $25 more, I could buy a brand new television. There's something wrong about that. My sister and I are buying new kitchen sets, but this is not going to be the one we buy. A TV should last more than 4 years!

5.0 out of 5 stars An unbeatable value!, July 20, 1999

I am so glad that I purchased this product. From the mute feature that automatically starts sub-titles to the skip commercial feature. Sleep alarm feature is also a plus. The picture is better than the one on my 27 inch T.V.. I am considering buying 2 more before this offer is withdrawn.

I recently gave this television as a Christmas present and the individual was extremely happy with this television, I couldn't believe how well it works. The picture is extremely clear, the sound is terrific and the color is amazing! I love the sleep alarm, a great feature for the price! Overall, I would say that this television is wonderful and I would recommend it to anyone!

2.0 out of 5 stars decent picture, poor reliability, April 8, 2001
By A Customer

Although the picture quality/contrast & controls were fine, there's just no compensating for typical G.E. (lack of) quality. After the warranty period was up (naturally), it began to show problems: not turning on, sticking on certain channels, etc. For the money, you can get a Sharp or Sony, a much better piece of HW.

1.0 out of 5 stars Quit working right after the warranty was up, December 19, 2001
This review is from: GE 13GP241 13" TV (Electronics)
This television set started showing signs of problems immediately after the warranty period expired. The most significant problem is that the unit would not power on. If you were patient, sometimes you could get the thing to turn on.

After about 3 weeks of this, the television set decided to never power up again. I only had the television for a little over a year, and it doesn't work.

The commercial skip feature does not actually detect when commercials are over. It is merely a timer. You have to guess how long the commercials will last. The set will return you to the station you were watching after the set duration of time has elapsed.

Also, if you're sensitive to high-pitch squealing (picture tube arc), this television set does emit a louder noise than most. It was quite difficult to fall asleep with this television on because it emitted a louder-than-usual (compared to other television sets) high-pitched squeal. This is often a sign of a poorly manufactured power supply -- which is probably the reason the set no longer will power on.

For a television set, save the hassle, and get a JVC, Toshiba, Sony or some other brand, that will continue functioning after the warranty has expired.
