Terrific pocket radio,
By
This review is from: GE 72585 Pocket Radio (Electronics)
It's true, as other reviewers have noted, that this unit won't give you the sort of reception you might expect from a larger, higher-priced unit. On the other hand, this is an excellent pocket-sized radio for toting along to the ballgame, carrying along on a hike or to the park, or tucking next to your pillow in bed. It's very thin and light, and the controls are all flush with the case, so it packs well. It won't fill a room with sound - it's not intended to - but it plays loud enough to listen to from a few feet, and the headphone jack can be used for private listening. Overall this is a nice, up-to-date rendition of the classic pocket radios from the 1950s dawn of the transistor.

The GE Pocket Radio is fantastic for worker bees such as myself. The reception is great, and the size can't be beat. I can take it anywhere: work, the beach, even the car! This purchase was so worth the money. Anyone who loves listening to the radio needs this handy gadget.

This is a handy little radio that is pretty darn rugged. It went to South America for the summer and performed pretty well under very adverse conditions. Battery use was great. It now resides in the small Paraguayan village of Costa Jhu, receiving lots of soccer games I am told. For the price, it's a gem.

do not get this radio,
This review is from: GE 72585 Pocket Radio (Electronics)
This is one of the more poorly made pocket radios around. The reception on this radio is poor and there is no light to indicate the strength of signal reception. Unlike pocket radios made by other brands, the antenna comes directly out of the case and is unable to swivel around limiting adjustments to improve reception. I was so disappointed with this model that I stopped using this radio after a day and instead ordered the panasonic pocket radio, which I have found to be of much better quality.

not my favorite, stay clear of this one,

I received this radio about 2 years ago and was never crazy about it. The sound quality is good for a small radio but I was disappointed with the reception. Sensitivity is good on both bands but I picked up a lot of interference from a local FM station all over the dial and therefore was not able to pick up distant stations very well. Another thing I didn't like was that on FM weak stations come in at a lower volume than strong ones instead of being "fuzzy" like on other radios I've had. This can be irritating if you move around with the radio because the volume varies with the strength of the signal as you go from one place to another. It's especially noticeable at high volume. The only good thing is that there's a headphone jack at the top so you can listen to the radio without disturbing anyone. I haven't used this radio much since I have another one that works better. I would not recommend it unless you don't live near a strong signal.

GE 72585,

This radio does not provide good AM reception at all. In Chicago, it is difficult to receive any of the 50,000-watt stations without constantly adjusting the dial and the radio position. I understand it is small, and its FM reception is quite good, but to take this radio to a baseball game as an earlier reviewer suggested leaves one very disappointed.

One of the better quality pocket transistor radios around,

Although GE's first version of this model, the 72585-A, was of bad quality, the company really shone through with their (internal) re-design -- model 72585-B. Thomson (the makers and owners of the GE Electronics brand) corrected the annoying volume and reception fluctuations that plagued this radio when listening to FM (you had to turn up the radio to max volume and also you would frequently loose the station you were listening to. On this model, Thomson also pumped up the radio's speaker output, so you don't have to turn up the radio so much to get a decent volume in a noisy environment. Also the idea of incorporating the FM antenna into the headphone jack (so you don't have to raise the FM whip when listening to FM stations with your stereo earphones) was ingenious. You can put the radio in your pocket and not worry about snapping the antenna off. I just wish that this radio came with a slightly larger-diameter speaker (about 2" would be nice), to make the sound less tinny. Otherwise, it's a neat radio. I bought two from Amazon last year - one for daily use and one for backup in case I drop this one. :-)

This GE pocket radio is probably the best radio and value in the somewhat narrow market. Inexpensive and the vendor shipped promptly.
