I purchased a SS GE Profile refrig/freezer in 2002. The refrig was super quiet, except when the IM-4 icemaker cycled. The IM-4 could be heard from the next room. After having a new floor installed, the contractors must have damaged something in the rear of the icemaker (pump). I replaced with the new IM-6. After checking my connections and looking for puddles, I had to continue to look inside the freezer to see if it was working. The IM-6 is so quiet, I could not hear the cycling. The only sound that was heard was the ice dropping into the empty bucket. Finally a quiet ice maker for my quiet refrigerator! Good job GE.

I purchased the GE Icemaker IM-6 to install in my frig that had never been equiped with one. It seems the icemaker is packaged with instructions and extra parts so that it fits EVERY refrigerator GE ever made. It was not hard finding the simple two page instructions for my model. But being a guy, it was real hard to throw out all those extra parts not needed - LOL.
The actual install was one of the simplest projects I've ever tackled. Was a little apprehensive when it took about 24hrs before it started producing cubes. But after that every hour on the hour... ice cubes drop. I like this icemaker very much. Quiet operation and plenty of ice to keep up with my four adult users. Sure beats filling ice trays by hand. Thanks GE.

Easy to install and works great. Having a tech come out would have been almost $300 but I purchased for 20% of this cost and installed myself in about 10-15 minutes. Nice thing about this purchase was the fact that not only did it come with the ice-maker, it came with pretty much every part that i might potentially have issues with down the road. (If you purchase different parts from a parts store, it would have been over $200.
Great buy and suggest ordering if you have issues with your ice-maker.

No problems,

The Ice maker works great. In fact, it almost makes too much ice. The ice falling into the bin is a little noisy, but otherwise I have no complaints. It was easy to install.

dropped right in,
This review is from: GE Icemaker Kit, IM-6
This kit contained everything I needed (except a water line) to add and icemaker to my fridge that came without one. The fridge was already set up for one, and adding the parts in the kit only took about 15 mins. Sourcing all of the parts separately would have cost at least twice as much. It actually has everything you need for about a dozen different GE fridges, and the hardest part is figuring out which instructions to follow. The instructions say to "use the letter that corresponds to the letter on the back of the fridge," but of course there are like 20 different letters on the back of the fridge. The icemaker works well so far and is quiet. It looks like the factory unit and the only issue I have is that the power cord extension inside the freezer is way too long, currently I have it stuffed down into the ice bin but that prevents the bin from sliding out to dump the ice.

Instructions are incorrect, GE customer service... incompetent,

I installed on an "M" type refrigerator and the instructions are wrong. GE tries to make this 1 part fit a huge number of fridges and it seems to me someone forgot to update the manual. The templates for cutting the tubes are too short and by the time you cut them and try to install them it is too late. Don't use the templates! Install tubes first, mark with pen and then cut! I expected more from GE. Very disappointed. When I contacted GE customer service they were very nice... and hugely incompetent. I told them the problem and gave them the EXACT part numbers and PART NAMES verbatim from the manual for the 2 parts I needed. The rep. said she was over night'ing the parts and sending extras "just in case". I was very excited to be back on track. I got them OVER a week late! There were 4 parts in the box and 6 listed on the invoice. The 4 parts I actually received had NOTHING to do with the parts I needed. Not even remotely close. The only 2 I needed were listed as "quantity ordered: 1, quantity shipped: 0" with No further explanation!

THE SAGA: You can skip this part if you've already decided to install this yourself. The ice maker in our GE Profile side-by-side was not making and/or delivering ice to the bucket. I called a local appliance repair company and told them so, and made a $70 appointment for them to come out eight days in the future, which was the soonest they could come. On the morning of the appointment, the repairman called and said he was "coming out to take a look at it" and wanted to confirm my address. I asked if he would be bringing repair parts with him. He said no. I asked whether he repaired ice makers at all or just removed and replaced them. He said he only R&Red them and would have to order a new one. I asked why he was bothering to come out then, since the thing didn't work and he wasn't going to be bringing a new one with him. He asked if I wanted to cancel the appointment. I said sure since he couldn't do anything without a new ice maker anyway. He said I should call his office and order the part, then he'd come out and install it for an estimated total of $300-$350. Instead, I looked on Amazon and found this kit. The Amazon description of the IM-6 listed my model of ice maker as one that it replaced, so I figured why not order one. If I found I couldn't install it myself, I'd get a local handyman to do it. So I bought it.THE ICEMAKER KIT, IM-6: It arrived in about ten days accompanied by a cubic foot of parts and a half-inch thick instruction manual with 67 pages in English. The manual had 14 sets of quite different detailed instructions depending on the model of GE frig. It said there was a label on the back of our frig that would tell me which set of instructions to use. There was no such label on the back of our frig. I called GE help line on the phone. I gave a very young-sounding woman my frig's model number. She said that it was odd that she had nothing on my model. (It's only about 6-7 years old.) She left the line to ask someone else. When she came back she said she had "very good news": I could forget the instruction manual and the box full of plastic parts that came with the new ice maker. All I had to do was "take the old one out and put the new one in." . . . Now, remember that I was calling GE to ask them for instructions as to HOW to take my old ice maker out and put a new one in. GE's answer: "Take the old one out and put the new one in." . . . And also remember that this is the company that found it necessary to create a 67-page booklet with 14 different sets of detailed instructions on HOW to take the old one out and put the new one in. . . . So, since GE had now left me entirely to my own resources, I examined the new ice maker, examined the old one, and started unscrewing things on the old one. After a good bit of trial and error, I took the old one out and put the new one in. With a side-by-side frig, the longer your arms, the smaller your hands, and the narrower your shoulders the less cussing you will do. It took me about an hour and a quarter, but it'll take me ten minutes the next time. I needed only a 1/4" socket on an 8"-long extension to a racket handle, but just a 1/4" nut driver would have been even better and would have made the job easier. I didn't do a thing with the box full of plastic parts. DOES THE NEW IM-6 ICEMAKER WORK?: Okay. So, 12 hours after I "finished" the job, I discovered that it had been making ice for quite a while. Not ice cubes, ice. It probably would have been making ice cubes hours earlier, too, but I had failed to transfer the "fill cup" from the old ice maker onto the new one so the water inflow did not go into the ice tray. Since GE had supplied me with no instructions for my model, I wasn't really surprised at my error. (Obviously, I hadn't "examined" the old ice maker as well as I should have.) I corrected my error, and two hours later I had ice cubes. But then the auger mechanism that delivers ice through the door did not work due to the same error, i.e., ice buildup was jamming the mechanism. I thawed out the freezer compartment, and that final problem was solved, too. NOTE THIS: Save yourself a whole lot of grief by doing a search on Youtube for "ice maker im6" and watch the five-minute video on how to install this model, which video I discovered too late. MY RATING OF THE ITEM: Even though the ice maker works great now--it makes ice much faster and more quietly than the original ice maker that came built into our frig--I cannot bring myself to give this item 5 stars after the GE manual and GE phone call fiascos, so it's getting 4 stars. Also, I'll come back and edit this downward if the new ice maker quits on me prematurely--and upward if it lasts a long time. (I did save a couple hundred bucks by dealing with this all myself, though.) Meanwhile, I stored all the unused plastic parts in the original box up in the attic. A lot of those parts are for other models of GE friges, but some of them I recognized as replacement parts for my own model. Many of the parts are for the water supply system, which I don't need right now. But I figured I might as well save them in case I do need them some day because they'd probably cost me $30 a piece if I had to order them separately--if I could get them at all.

I bought my new GE fridge without icemaker. I did some research and figured I could save some $ by installing by one myself. The project took me less than half an hour.
I suggest you read the instructions. Find out which two pages are for your model fridge, and separate the parts you won't need. (It comes with parts to fit models other than your own.) Then unplug the fridge and take your time so you get it right the first time. Your frozen food will be fine for the half hour or less it would take you. The instructions say use a knife to cut a plastic tube, instead I used heavy scissors and still have all my fingers. If you have a PVC pipe cutter that would be better. |
