Great product for staining cabinets! I am a messy painter/re-finisher, so naturally my husband just groaned when I told him my plans to refinish our golden oak bathroom cabinets. After much research, this is the gel stain I purchased for this project. This particular shade -Java- is a dark espresso and just the color I was seeking. I couldn't be happier with the ease of application and it's coverage.

My application technique may have been unorthodox but I simply used a tube sock over my gloved hand to apply. Before you start, ready your finished surface to except the stain with either a deglosser or lightly hand sand. (WoodCraft provides instructions that may differ from my technique). I am always in a hurry when doing a project and sometimes I rush through important steps such as these. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP! On this project I immediately noticed a spot that was not accepting the stain the same as other areas so after 1st coat dried I paid a little attention to this area with my sanding block and viola! never noticed this spot again. After 3 coats with 12-24 hour drying times between (longer than the manufacturer suggests)my cabinets were a rich java color I had dreamed about. Best part is, it is the neatest job I have ever done. Not one single drop on any thing other than my cabinets. Mess free and very easy to use. In fact, it was so easy and provided such a nice result my husband didn't even blink when i mentioned refinishing the kitchen cabinets!

This Gel Stain is a great product. I have had several professional contractors ask me who updated my cabinets. I just tell them I stained them myself. You should see their eyes. When I tell them that is was under $100 for everything, they almost faint. I recently completed a mostly DIY Kitchen upgrade, shown below (I had the backsplash professionally installed). The total project without appliances was under $2,100.

The hardware was $2 for each handle. I also added soft closing hinges for the cabinets ($3.12 each).

Contractors have mistaken this for a $10,000 upgrade.

I also updated the bathroom cabinets as well shown below. I was able to finish the bathroom (3 coats) and put 2 coats on in the kitchen with one gallon.

I used a matte finish polyurethane for the kitchen cabinets and a gloss finish for the bathroom cabinets.

I have used this on doors, trim, windows (wood of course). I think the recent bad reviewers don't really understand how the product works. You build the color for best results. First you really should sand. Other reviewers have said it's not necessary, but I have done it either way and prefer sanding first. Using fine or medium sand paper, I sand with the grain of the wood just to get the sheen off a little bit, then I dampen a paper towel and wipe off the dust. Let dry. Next, I use an old sock or a rag and wipe on a thin layer of gel. Use a sponge brush to get into detailed areas and wipe off excess gel with the rag. Let it sit for at least 12 hours and repeat until desired color. I usually end up around 3-4 coats. It's a dark wood, but not too dark and when you build color, you can still see all the wood grain. It turns out beautiful and more natural looking than just slapping on a thick layer of gel and letting it dry. I love it. I just ordered another quart.

This stuff goes a long way. With one pint, I stained two bathroom vanities, two pieces of furniture and my banister! The color is the deep chocolate I was looking for (not red/warm). It was easy to use and looks professional. I highly recommend it!

Have to make sure you stir it very well or it will leave dull/shiny streaks on the surface you are using it on.
