Product Description

CocoTek organic growing medium consists of three different types of compressed coco coir. This high-quality, low sodium growing medium is an environmentally-friendly alternative to sphagnum peat moss. When hydrated with water, CocoTek rapidly expands, saving time and effort. General Hydroponics CocoTek growing mediums can be used exclusively by themselves, blended together or mixed with expanded clay pellets, perlite or topsoil.

I found it locally after I made the purchase.

It makes a nice addition to my homemade mix that lightens the potting soil, does not compact and holds water very well.

Coir is much closer to a sterile medium than peat.

I love coir. I use it in my homemade potting mix. The only warning I have about this bigger block of compressed coir is that you need to make sure the container you put it to soak in, is large enough. I put it into a rather large metal tub (5 gallon) but when the block began to soak and grow there was so much pressure sideways from the expanding coir that it ruined the tub - at least it ruined the shape of the tub. Other than that lapse of judgement on my part - it is a great product. It makes a nice addition to my homemade mix that lightens the potting soil, does not compact and holds water very well. It replaces the peat moss in my mix.

As a 20+ year organic biodynamic gardener, and permaculture specialist, I am always on the hunt for the most environmentally sensible choices for my gardening habits. Peat moss, the usual choice for making soil light and water retentive, is environmentally devastating through the harvesting process. I needed a good alternative and began using coconut choir mixed with my own compost mix or -Coast of Main Organic Bumper Crop-, which is a complete soil amendment. This two combined is a nutrient rich, eco-conscious choice for all organic gardening applications. Many bagged soil mixes contain unknown ingredients, learning to make and mix your own soil for potting, raised beds, burmed beds, etc is the way to go. This Coco Tek block expands. Be ready. I had a block indoors during the winter and struggled a few times with cutting off a bit to wet and use and finally found it to be too labor intensive. It is much easier to dedicate a big bucket to the coco tek block and douse the corner with water until what you need simply sloughs off. Since spring has arrived I have moved my coco tek bucket out to the potting arbor and simply drop the block into the big (BIG) bucket and add water with the hose. Walk away and let it expand for a while, then add my amendements as I fill beds and planters. It is clean and economical, and all my fruit trees, vegetables, grapes, berries, herbs and flowers seem to love it.

Easiest organic container gardening recipe:

1 block Coco Tek 5kg bail
1 bag Coast of Main Bumper Crop
-- dig or buy and add earthworms

Every order I have placed arrived quick and well packaged.

I bought this same product at a nursery near my house and only paid $11.00 for it. Why is it double the price on here. I do like the product but would never pay this price. Check nearby nurseries first.

I use in a 50/50 mix with perlite with great results! Much less expensive than potting soil and much more effective on feeding.

This stuff is great. I use it for my worm bin and to amend my soil mixes. I can use it hydroponically or aquaponically. It is all natural. Great Stuff.

There's not a lot to say about this product, I suppose. The quality of the coco is good to excellent, with few contaminants. There doesn't appear to be as much need to flush out salts as there is in cheaper brands I've purchased. I did prebuffer/precharge the coco before use, and it appears to be performing as well as expected. Clones rooted in coco strike fast and grow vigorously, other plants in pure coco are growing fast and furious, and it appears to work well as a substitute for peat in an organic amended soilless mix giving the mix a great texture and excellent water/air ratio.

I will almost certainly purchase this again.

Use a wheelbarrow when you add the water. 5kg is a lot of planting medium. I'm using as an organic soil amendment in my heavy clay soil and to help control moisture in my potted plants.

I still love it. Shipping was somewhat quick, Three days. Product is very good. Will be using this to start European Night Crawler worm bins four and five! Got to love it. Mix this with Black Kow @ 60% Coco-Coir and 40% Black Kow Manure, then top sprinkle with Purina Worm chow on 40% of the bed surface. Do not mix chow into bedding. Worms love this combination.
