GENERAL AIRE G99 MEDIA AIR CLEANER FILTER GAUGE

With so much on everyone's plate and ME never thinking about furnaces and such, my husband decided to purchase and install this nifty little gauge. This gauge will tell him when it's time to change the filter in the furnace. Or, I can even see when it indicates it is time and then I can go nag him about it!! What a great deal!

The unit registers the state of the filter every time the furnace runs. A little needle points to the status of the filter which is listed on the gauge. I saw it running this morning. When in the green area the filter is clean. When the needle starts to hit the red, time to change the filter! What could be easier?

Tom said this unit was super easy to install. It took him less than fifteen minutes. He used an electric drill with a 3/8 inch bit. The gauge is installed anywhere in the blower chamber. By the way, we have a gas furnace --

The directions were excellent and simple to understand. So far the unit is working well and is accurate. This should also help improve the efficiency of our furnace because now we {Tom} will be changing the filter on time. We use fleeted throw-away filters.

Wouldn't it be nice if these nifty little gadgets were standard equipment on all furnaces. Tom wishes he would have purchased this a long time ago!

Thank you.

Pam

This is an extremely simple device. It does seems to work. It clearly is not a precisin device. For example, the hole they have you drill for the nipple of the device is too big and certainly does not seal against the nipple tightly. You have hard plastic in a hole that is too big for a good seal.

I guess it doesn't matter, but it sure does not instill confidence, either.

I purchased this item from Amazon last fall after seeing it showcased in the Family Handyman Magazine. It arrived from the Company very promptly and it is easy to install, but be sure to check first where you are drilling on the furnace's fan chamber door. It is essentially a vacuum gauge in that as the filter gets plugged, the suction on the gauge ( downstream from the filter) increases and causes the needle to rise. You also have to adjust the calibration screw to 'zero it'( easy with a standard tip screwdriver) after you install a new filter and while the fan is running. Before I owned this gauge, I changed the filter every two months. The gauge has basically verified my previous do-it-by- the- date method. It provides a quick visual check and you can mount it externally ( say on a wall) if you run a tube to the fan chamber.

This is really an amazing item. I checked the patent application for the theory of the device. Amazing. And, it works perfectly. It is extremely sensitive. Best of all, you really don't have to think about numbers. I calibrated it to a new 3M, Filtrete 700 filter and compared it to a precision gage. The calibration mark corresponds to 0.05 inch of water. The change filter mark corresponds to 0.10 inch water. Over the last two months the gage has moved about half of the range so I'll probably get about 4 months out of a filter. At least now I'll know precisely when to change the filter and keep my health.

There are several shapes and face designs available on this gauge. The writer that alludes to it being
overproced is correct. A clever use of $.20 worth of plastic. That said,I consider this gauge absolutely essential on any A.C. or (particularly) heat pump systems. I use high efficiency filters which can only be accurately judged by this gauge measuring resistance. Gauge MUST be mounted level with an absolutely air tight connection to air return.
.
This gauge can save your A.C. or heat pump compressor from excessive head pressures caused by restricted air flow. Works well.

This is a decent low cost product, but you have to adjust it every time you put in a new filter. This is especially true if you change the filter type. Also, I would only advise using this product with a single speed furnace blower.

A good general guide, but condition indication pointer fluctuates too much. You can tap the meter several times and get a different indication each time. It may cost more, but it needs a sturdier build for a consistent result.

The "General Aire G99 Media Air Filter Gauge" is an inexpensive, easy to install, useful instrument to help you know when the furnace filter needs to be replaced. It is VERY important to get the correct air flow quantity to keep the unit running and save you money on heating and cooling. This device has already saved me more than $50 by showing the filter I was sold to replace the original was too fine to get the correct amount of air to keep the heat running when the outside air temp. was 15 degrees F. Every furnace should have one of these gauges installed at the factory.
