5.0 out of 5 stars Simply too cool, December 11, 2003
By
Daniel Frank Aviles (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) - See all my reviews
I've been a raving fan of the Sector General books for many, many years. These novels by James White are so full of fun ideas and quirky plots that I'm sure anyone will be tempted to read them more than once. The human protagonists are likeable and you can't help but enjoy the many different kinds of aliens that are the staff and patients of this incredible hospital.
White's stile is light and entertaining. These books run the gamut from xeno-medical problems that are utterly weird and wonderful to much more introspective and thought-provoking explorations of the psychologies of other alien species and societies. This is the kind of story that Star Trek should have been, and the Monitor Corps is a better version of Star Fleet with cool aliens of all sorts. Seriously, how many stories will include aliens that run the gamut from radiation-eaters to telepathic dragonflies to the elephantine Tralthans to the insectile Melfans to chlorine-breathers and gigantic armored sentient fish and many others... the list could go on for pages. Truly worth exploring.

2.0 out of 5 stars Weak fiction, fails to hold reader interest, March 5, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: General Practice, A Sector General Omnibus (Hardcover)
I think this is well intentioned fiction, but the problem is it's too bland. The characters, like the insectoid main character are lacking in drive. She (it?) just seems to fret a lot, worry and whine.

Hey, this is a subjective review---as are all reviews. This series either floats your yacht or it doesn't. Just a word to the wise: don't believe all the raves about this series until you've read a few yourself.

I like strong characters who are trying to DO something, achieve something. That's why I prefer writers like James Schmitz:Telzey Amberdon (Telzey Amberdon (Baen))
