4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide, but watch for mistakes, August 5, 2006
This review is from: Series 7 General Securites Representative Exam License Exam Manual (General Securities Representative Exam License Exam Manua-(Series 7)) (Paperback)
I purchased this guide with the test question CD. In general, the guide is very well written, and the test CD is excellent. Compared to the three other study guides I purchased, this guide has been the best.

The text is relatively clear and concise, although in some cases I found the descriptions too brief. That's good if you're a trivia-sponge, but not so good if you need context and explanation to absorb a fact. Also, some pivotal facts are explained well, but not highlighted as pivotal. It can be hard to determine which pieces of data may help you correctly answer more than one test question, and which might be rarely tested.

The guide is divided into units, and each starts with an overview page describing a chapter's difficulty and relative importance (number of test questions to expect). Another page describes knowledge objectives. Material sections are followed by short quizzes, although the answers to those are buried in later pages and hard to find quickly. Finally, the expected unit tests give you a feel for your progress. Most guides follow roughly this format, but this particular guide did a better job than others.

I've recently downloaded an update guide that includes new regulatory information since 2005. This is a nice touch - none of the other guides I've purchased offer this. Of course, it was a little tricky to FIND this update, but I'm glad I have it. It's definitely an advantage other test-takers might not have.

Unfortunately, the chapters aren't ordered by any discernable method - priority, relevance to other material, etc. I've found numerous points where important items were described LATER in the material. I've also found 4 test CD questions so far that were incorrect; even the rationales provided for the answers confirmed this. So far they've been fairly obvious, but they can be confusing when you first start out. (It's as if the database simply thinks answers C and D are reversed in some cases.)

Overall, if you want to really KNOW all of this material, you'd probably be better off with a course rather than self-study guides. None of the items I've tried have done a good job of giving me all of the information I need, and I've had to weigh them against one another to round out the missing data. But this particular guide, and especially its CD, has been invaluable in the "pass the test" category. I'd definitely recommend it over some of the other options out there.

One warning - GET THE CD. The guide is NOT worthless without it (some others are), but it's definitely far less valuable. There are several paper practice exams included with the guide itself, but there aren't nearly as many test questions offered. Since these test questions are usually drawn from actual S7 exams, every question you know ahead of time is an advantage. If you don't get the CD you're giving up a very valuable resource.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you can pass the Practice Tests you will have no problem with the real test, March 13, 2007
This review is from: Series 7 General Securites Representative Exam License Exam Manual (General Securities Representative Exam License Exam Manua-(Series 7)) (Paperback)
If you study the material presented in this manual, and you can consistantly pass the practice tests, you will have no problem with the real test. This set not only teaches you the concepts needed to pass the exam, it also guides you on what types of questions you will actually see on the exam. The drill and practice CD is an invaluable tool to prepare with because it presents questions very similar to the type you will see on the actual test along with an instant explaination of the correct answer.

1.0 out of 5 stars Kaplan's editor should be fired!, January 22, 2009
This review is from: Series 7 General Securites Representative Exam License Exam Manual (General Securities Representative Exam License Exam Manua-(Series 7)) (Paperback)
I have purchased many textbooks during college and thought some of them were a waste of money, but after paying a little fortune for this Kaplan "copy-&-paste" course, I have never been so highly disappointed. The book is NOT organized and it is a very hard read for anyone normal who needs complete explanations and logical organization of topics. The book ignores semantic and syntactic organization.

Nothing is more annoying than missing a question, but it's downright frustrating when you can't find the answer in the book, because the page numbers are not correct! The page number errors in the index and also in the table of contents are numerous. With the number of errors within the index and the table of contents, I am under the assumption that this edition was not proofread, the index was not updated and text structure/paragraph flow ignored.

The exam software and the course do not complement one another. There have been times where the answers to the exam questions could not be found in the course. I have had to supplement some of the topics by Series 7 for Dummies or reading explanations off of the internet.

I gave this course one star for their "Take Note" and "Test Topic Alerts" that appear randomly, although these contain important information, I find them distracting. They could have put them along side the text instead of interrupting the paragraph, and at times, even sentences.

I will never buy another Kaplan course again! I would recommend anyone considering a Kaplan Series 7 to invest your money on Proschools course or something comparable, because this one is not worth the time or money.
