For archaeologists, this is one of the last options for a contour gauge. Unfortunately the really good french ones are not produced any more, and there is not much choice left. Decent quality at an extremely competitve price.

I bought it to install vinyl floor tile, and will use it to cope crown molding. It feels solid in the hand. The steel pins are small, allowing for accurate reads.

But it is kinda stiff. Not a problem for me, but you can't use this tool to profile softer materials. There is no mechanism to adjust the tension (the housing is riveted together). Since I don't foresee ever wanting to profile a soft material, I won't deduct a star, but look elsewhere if this is your intent.

As others have mentioned, the movement of the pins is stiff - INCREDIBLY stiff. As in, trying to move all of them at once (as I suspect you would over a gradually curved surface) requires some serious effort. Like, put your weight into it effort. This makes it totally useless for anything that has any give, or a delicate finish on it. I would NOT use this on a glossy surface for fear of slipping while trying to get the contour and mangling the surface with the metal pins.

That said, the pins THEMSELVES are a bit on the flimsy side. Enough so that, if you try to use this around an object that is smaller than it's length (I was playing around with PVC pipes and things), you can only capture about 80% of the shape. Because of the double whammy of the pins being so hard to move, and simultaneously not rigid enough, the pins on the last 1/4" or so of a shape simply bend away, instead of pushing through. So while a pipe should make a perfect "C" of a half circle, what you end up with is a sort of flattened "D" instead - with straight sides.

I returned mine because it simply won't work for any of the projects I have in mind for it (I'm an artist, not a woodworker by trade).

I needed this tool for a college project where I was making 60 molding profiles drawings. I was using a profile gauge that belonged to the school; it was falling apart and slowing me down so much I was in fear of not finishing the project. Finally in desperation I bought this one and what a difference! I moved so fast I was finished in a day. This was a smart buy and a quality tool. Thanks

I turn yo-yos. This was an excellent choice for me to match the second side of my turned yo-yo into the same shape as the first side so the yo-yo balances. It does exactly what the advertisement says it does and is well built to last a long time.

This gauge is perfect for our custom hand made wooden stem wine glasses. It is very well made and even though we've used this extensively, it still works like it is brand new.

The contour duplication gauge was the exact tool I needed to locate the same trim at the lumber yard that was used in my home. Ordering was easy and the price was reasonable.

I'm glad I read the reviews by other user and purchased this item instead of others. It is correct. This tools holds it shape perfectly. I used it to get the required shape on a wood floor transition. Held it shape perfectly and was easy to hold against the material I was working with. I will buy this tool for a gift anytime.

This is a helpful device, but the one thing that needs to be improved on is to make the metal out of some material that resists rust better. Those of us who live in humid areas of the country would appreciate that more. All said, this is a great gauge for transfering contours from one form to another.

Like another reviewer, I have heard of the superior contour gauge that used to be made by the French. If it was available, I would have purchased it instead of this one. But I guess this is the best I can get now.
