As for General's caliper, I find the readings consistent and reliable. No, I haven't tested this caliper against a precise and known size such as found at the National Institute of Stardards and Technology (hehe). I'm not working with anything to a 3-digit (decimal thousandths of an inch) accuracy requirement even though the tool is capable of this measurement, and for home use that is more than plenty. The caliper mode also changes over for millimeters or fraction of an inch if that's your thing (instead of just decimal inches). If you want industrial grade so you can be a klutz and drop this tool on the floor or smack it around and expect it to work flawlessly, then you really don't know how to treat precision tools and this won't meet your needs either. However, for hobby, home, or small shop use this caliper is just fine. I find the size, weight, and features are nice and it is easy to use. The unit seems fairly easy to hold and use, even with all the electronics / display weighing down one end.
No squinting or eye tricks are needed here, such as when trying to read a scale or a vernier. The digital display numbers are easy to read with or without corrective eye wear. It would be nice if the display had a backlight, but it does not. For the time I've had this caliper, I've had to replace the 2 batteries that came with the unit (it has one inside as a spare for the one in the caliper).Read more ›
I just came here to see what others had to say about it
People are saying it eats batteries, mine worked right out of the box and has not drained the battery it came with. I have not used the spare yet. I have only had it a few months but so far so good. I wonder how long have people been getting out of the batteries? I do not use it everyday.
I will update this review if I go to use it and they are dead within a year. If I get a year out of it I will be happy. I am a casual user so maybe this effects others more.
I think the main problem is when people are closing the case the display may be turning back on when it hits the foam in the lid.
The very first thing I did was remove the rectangle shape foam in the lid above where the display sits. It was already pre-cut, I just had to remove it. Now the display does not hit anything when the case is closed. No battery issues at all so far at least!
Also this thing is awesome! All metal, beefy construction. I love it. Does not feel like a toy at all. I like how heavy it is!
I have not dropped it so I have no idea how it would hold up to that but I would never expect something like this to survive a fall. It is a measuring instrument, not a wrench.
I tested its accuracy against a metal machinists ruler and it is accurate to the MM at least.
The battery is simple to change, no idea why that is so confusing. :)
Only three buttons. left to right; Mode to switch between MM, Inches or Inches with fractions. On/Off, and Zero. Simple to use. It is at Zero wherever you turn it on so no issues there.
.I just wanted to clear up any reservations.
The first battery lasted about a year, with only occasional use. The second battery that comes with it lasted only a month, maybe the battery was old. I just bought a 3 pack to always have extra on hand.
I mostly use this when I'm planing stock or setting up dados.
The fractional units is nice, although I usually use the decimal inches. Feels solid and heavy. Can measure inside spaces, the depth gage at the end is a little clunky as the head is heavy.
So far so good.

Very nice, rugged and accurate. The case seems a bit tricky to open and close, but otherwise this caliper is just what it should be. Good value.Published 11 days ago by THOMAS DEY
