This tool is a normal tongue and groove pair of pliers that come with rubber caps that cover the jaws in order to not mar decorative parts.

This tool will work on "nuts" (decorative chrome caps etc) from 1/4" to about 2 inches in diameter. The jaw will open wider than 2 inches - but 2 inches is about the max width for a good solid grip (might work on a 2.5" nut). With the rubber caps removed, it can do double duty as regular tongue and groove pliers.

It comes with an extra pair of rubber caps so when the 1st pair get cut-up or ripped, they can be replaced. The rubber caps do not come installed, and they are a bit difficult to get on. (Push the caps on by holding the pliers firmly and pressing the pliers into the rubber tip while the tip is braced against a solid object). I have not tried, but they are probably very hard to remove. The spare set of rubber caps can be slipped over the rear end of the handles for storage, but they come off of the handles fairly easily.

The pliers feel solid and strong. The handles are made of about 5/32" thick steel while the jaws are over 3/8" thick. The tool is 10 1/8" long and up to 2 5/8" wide at the handles (when closed). The jaw area (with the rubber caps in place) is about 1.5" OD when fully closed.

The rubber caps are about 3/32" thick - I am not convinced they will always protect decorative chrome from the rather sharp deep ridges in the metal jaws, but they did just fine the one time I used them.

I bought these pliers (General Tool 159) along with the "SUPERIOR TOOL 06012 PLIERS PLUMBING" pliers. The "06012" pliers failed to loosen the decorative chrome cap (it just slid around) while these General Tool 159 pliers easily did the job.

I purchased this tool with the intent of using it as purposed--to gently tighten a threaded part without scratching it. While the pliers' design is a great idea, the engineering is pathetic. The rubber jaw-covers do not fit properly over the jaws, which leaves the tips unsupported. This caused the rubber to desintegrate with the very first squeeze. Attempts to get the rubber better positioned only caused it to tear. After their very first use, I was on to the replacement covers that were included. Even though I tried to be more careful the second time around, they immediately self-destructed on use. Wrapping them up in electrical tape is helping to hold them together, but I don't anticipate getting even 1% of the work-life I originally expected from this tool. Fortunately, I was only burned for around $20.00. If you're thinking of buying this tool, don't. Keep searching. And, please let us know if you find something that works!

The grips on this thing are flimsy and don't seem to want to stay on. The wrench itself is nothing to write home about. It didn't lock well and to be honest this thing will probably sit in my toolbox as an afterthought.

I bought this for the soft jaws which I installed on my professional Solder Seal pliers. These pliers look like "China's worst"... the kind you buy for $2 at a flea market. They are not professional grade.

One comes without the soft jaw. At the second the soft jaw brake until installation.
Buy this only for one or two times usage. NOT for usage for longer time

This is just a CHEAP (die-cast grooves, not machined = rough movement)set of pliers and (2) pair of poor fitting pads. A much better choice would be to get ****10-PC PLIERS COVERS SET from amazon & apply to your own (probably higher quality) pliers. I would return but it is tolerable only because of the price & low usage. Will be using for rather delicate work so I assume the rubber covers will hold up - if not I will update.
3/09/2013: as these are just regular pliers w/ rubber coating, the teeth under the padding cuts right through & trashes your part. If made for covers, there shouldn't be teeth & just let the rubber covers do the gripping. DONT BUY, you can do as well/better w/ tape wrapped around your (better) own pliers. Re-rate to minus 1.

This is the cheapest set of plumbing pliers ever! Feels like the tools at the .99 cent store. The rubber soft jaws ripped off after the first use.. It does come with a second pair, but that ripped off too. Waste of my money. I would give it a -3 stars if I could. The locking positions are loose and will fail on you. The metal is die cast, made out of the cheapest metal ever. Don't buy this. If you do anyways, just remember my review. Instead, just go to Home Depot and get Plastidip and really coat your pliers and make your own. Waaaay better!

These pliers are ok, but not great, or even above average. The rubber portion of the grip area just slips over regular jaw pliers. They don't close evenly in the wider opening range of operation. I got them to use on shotgun barrels so they wouldn't mare the finish, but I don't find them suitable for that purpose. I will be purchasing the more expensive channel-lock brand that has the non-marring portion as an intrinsic part of the jaw.
