Product Description

Solid Point Steel Automatic Center Punch, With Replaceable Tip, 1 Hand Operation, Black Oxide Finish Inhibits Rust, 5" Body With 1/2" Diameter.

From the Manufacturer

Use automatic center punches to precisely punch material for drilling and layout work. Spring operated tool drives hard point in a single one-handed operation that eliminates striking a punch with a hammer. Spring tension cap can be adjusted for light to heavy strokes. Punch depth can be set for repetitive work. This is a steel automatic center punch for making lighter markings than #78. It has a black oxide finish that inhibits rust. The all-steel body is 5" with threaded, replaceable hardened steel point and shaft. The body diameter is 1/2".

I AM A PROFESSIONAL CARPENTER AND METAL WORKER AND I WILL TELL YOU THAT THIS PUNCH IS VERY POOR FOR THE PRICE. I BOUGHT MINE A YEAR AGO AND AM VERY SORRY THAT I DID. IT LEAVES NEXT TO NO INDENTATION IN THE MATERIAL AND A DRILL BIT WILL SLIDE RIGHT OFF OF IT. I RECENTLY PURCHASED A STARRETT AND HAVE FOUND THAT IT IS WELL WORTH THE FEW EXTRA DOLLARS FOR AN EXCELLENT PRODUCT. DON'T GO CHEAP, GET THE REAL DEAL!

I am not happy with the construction of this product. I do alot of center punching in the line of work and this product failed to produce. The tip is removable and screws into the end of the shaft. It backs out quite frquently and the tip broke off at the threads after using it less than ten times. This is definitely not for industrial use maybe for the home user.

I purchased this tool and used it right away. I finished the job, the punch rolled off the workbench and TIP no more. After searching and searching, I finally found more TIPs. A 2 pack. Wow! So they know the TIPs are going to break with ease. I replaced the TIP. Put it to use marking for holes to put a convertible top on. SNAP! There goes another TIP. I just replaced it. Luckily, it was a 2 pack, right? Oh, forgot to mention that the TIPs are as much as the punch. So, that officially makes this the tool that keeps on giving... er, taking. Add that to the misfire (whatever makes it not work periodically), and I have another tool that im not willing to use for fear I'll just see more money going down the drain. I thought doing the work yourself meant saving.

My old #79 General punch would run circles around this one. This has no power at all.
Ths spring is much smaller that the old one. Just about makes an indent in wood. In the very soft sterling silver
it just about scratches the surface, at the heaviest setting. The quality has gone way down with General Tool.

This is the 3rd or 4th General model 79 punch that I have owned. The first three went through many thousands of holes each, along with replacement tips. The latest one I got had the same "model 79" stamped on it, but it sure seemed different to me than the previous ones I owned. The previous ones would sometimes misfire and not actuate. They probably did this 1 of 100 times, which I didn't like, but could live with. The new version did this 1 of 10 times. Truly annoying, bordering not usable. The tip shattered after a few hundred punches punching mild steel. The replacement tip did the same, but way up in the body of the punch. Despite having it on the heaviest setting, it still didn't make enough of a dent for a pilot drill to not walk. I threw it in the trash when my new Starrett came in. I suspect the "new" versions of this punch were probably made in a country where quality isn't important, and labor is cheap. I hope for General's sake they don't do this with any of their other products. I would rather pay $20 dollars extra for a tool that is reliable and made in a place where quality and materials matter.

I did not purchase this item from Amazon, but a local tool store. I also paid ten more dollars than is currently listed here. I use the punch quite a bit lunching aluminum extrusion and doors. So far it works perfectly. Easy push down with a decent indentation. No, it doesn't make a crater, but that's not what it's made for. I would happily purchase another one, albeit at a better price. I got real tired of those crappy, four dollar ones you can find at most stores.

I can't tell you how many tips I went through until one irretrievably broke inside the threaded shaft. The shock of the internal hammer hitting the anvil loosens the tips and the threads started to brake off when it's next used. Not cool...

Pass on this guy. Buy a Starrett or another high quality brand. It's worth it in the long run

I'm a Carpenter who works with a lot of metal. I bought this punch because I lost mine and needed a replacement. It looked sturdy in the package, and it was expensive (26.00). It's almost worthless, unless you are punching cardboard. There are better auto punches out there.
