Curry-flavored Opera,
By Charles (Virginia beach, Virginia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Generally Singing (Audio CD)
I've never been a huge opera fan but clearly, my appetite for music has been too easily satisfied all these years. That's what I discovered when a friend suggested I listen to the CD,"Generally Singing" recorded by a retired Army general, Jerry Curry. The musical recipe that awakened my senses? Well, familiar arrangements in English helped - like "Danny Boy" and the spiritual, "Deep River". Then, sprinkled throughout are Jerry's vocal stylings of praise music in "Praise Ye The Lord", "Psalm 23" and one that he wrote called "Before the Throne". Nice choral accompaniment on that one with a pureness in the acoustics and voices that fairly sounded heavenly to these ears. But then, the main course: traditional opera songs. While I was taken by Jerry's range in "Mattinata" I was totally amazed by the emotional verve in "O sole mio". Get ready for a tingle on the back of your neck. This is a great CD to play again and again. The music "soaks in" and stays with you. All the musical incredients satisfy - but especially that "touch of Curry". It's a nice mix. Just wondering though: should this guy change his name? How about Generalissimo Geraldo Currini? Or, Gerriano Curriano? At any rate, I'd say a guy named Pavoratti needs to make room on stage for a new kid on the block.
