5.0 out of 5 stars Romance with a lot of wits, August 9, 2001
By
This review is from: Generals Ring (Hardcover)
You could say that this is a romance book, but for me, it's abundant with wits. It started with the second generation of Lowenskold after the wellknown General Lowenskold. The general had a ring that he wished to be buried with him. But two days after his burial, his granddaughter also died, so the graveyard was dug up and opened for the whole night. The ring was stolen and a terrible bad luck had come upon the thief. But the bad luck itself did not end until the ring was returned to the owner.

The story then developed to the big family of Lowenskold. Karl Arthur, one of the Lowenskold detemined that he would leave all the earthly life and became a pastor. He was blessed with a gift to convince and sooth people. But even though he loved Christ and ready to die for Him, he did not love his fellow human. It had brought trouble for him and people in his life. He broke up with his fiancee, his wife ran away from him, he almost murdered his mother, he broke up his relationship with his family. But was it true that all that had been caused by the curse of a woman whose father, fiancee and brother had been sentenced to death because of the General's ring though they were innocent?

Lagerlof did not make this story a ghost story though the first part is full of superstitious. She made it a romance, a real love toward one another, and real love does not have to end in marriage. Love could emerge from just a coincidence, a forceful marriage, and even a devil.

Reading this book, you will understand why she got that Nobel prize.
