Book Description

1987 Corrie Herring Hooks Series (Book 8)
This guide has two parts. The Directory section gives the following information: over 1,500 colour paintings of birds of different ages, sexes and seasons maps of the distribution of the species that breed or are regularly seen in Europeextensive information on the appearance, status, voice, habitat, nest, eggs, broods, incubation, young, development and food for each of 429 species

The Life of a Bird section tells what it is like to be a bird. It is an account of survival, of the advantages and disadvantages in the various methods of growing up, moulting, feeding, migrating, breeding--of adapting or succumbing to the multiplicity of threats to its existence. Whether it is read as a story, or dipped into, it explains what we see birds doing, and the often hidden reasons why they are doing it.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This book combines an identification guide to the birds "which breed in Europe, plus those which visit as nonbreeders in reasonable numbers," with an introductory ornithology text. The 429 taxonomically arranged species accounts in the guide section include English and Latin names, terse description, range map, and one or more small but clear color paintings; for most species, all major plumage variations are depicted. The text sections simply and clearly describe the anatomy, physiology, classification, behavior, ecology, and conservation of birds. At least six other English-language field guides to European birds are currently available; the extensive treatment of avian biology is this work's special asset.Paul B. 1.0 out of 5 stars Dont't Buy this Book, July 8, 2000

This review is from: New Generation Guide to the Birds of Britain and Europe (Corrie Herring Hooks Series) (Hardcover)
Don't buy this book. Half (160 of 320 pages) is devoted to material on behavior and general characteristics, that is too simplified for a biologist (or veteran birder) and too detailed for some one seeking identification of new species. The identification sections show 7 birds per page, without size or habitat perspective. The illustrations are accurate to the extent of my observations, and range maps are shown on the ID pages. The print is about 6 point, and I simply could not read it in the field. The authors are obviously expert and anxious to please, but this book will not please anyone.
