A breath of life, a kiss of death,

This review is from: Generation Dead: Kiss of Life (Generation Dead Novels) (Hardcover)
Kiss of Life is the follow up to Generation Dead. Daniel Waters again goes the distance with this book. He rips social issues apart such as racism, sexism and the anti gay movement. We see humanity at its most basal form, showing us that people can be cruel when anything goes against their beliefs.
In this round Phoebe is trying to reanimate Adam who seems to be 'waking up' slower than other bionically different. She's still trying to reconcile feelings between Adam and Tommy when Tommy decides to go on a mission to help bridge the gap between zombies and the bleeders. Pete, who you remember killed Adam in the first place, is working at the Hunter's Center to undergo community service and therapy, is being recruited for the Anti Zombie movement. Meanwhile the Hunter Center gets exposed for what it really is doing to the zombies, and more and more zombies are being killed, massacred, burned, crucified, with the law not behind them, but certainly not stopping them. This book was brilliant Daniel Waters is an amazing break out author and his light 'teenage' tone masks the deeper uglier issues that are seen in today's society still. I recommend this with two thumbs up and 5 stars all the way!

This review is from: Generation Dead: Kiss of Life (Generation Dead Novels) (Hardcover)
A friend picked up Generation Dead for me on a whim. The cover had caught his eye and he knew that I enjoyed a good book, be it Steinbeck, King, Rowling, etc...anything GOOD. Well Generation Dead was awesome! Purely and simply fantastic. The allegory and characters all spoke to me and of course the ending kicked my a**. I had no idea this was the beginning of a series when I finished it and well, that was last August. I was stranded on a beach in Florida, staring at the ocean oblivious to any natural beauty because I was devastated :) That for me folks = GREAT READ.
I just finished Kiss of Life last night and I LOVED every minute of it...it was a great continuation of the story. I was a bit worried in the beginning as it was slower than I had anticipated and pretty sad (atleast for me); but given the ending of the first book, I am glad that Mr. Waters took the time to explore the ramifications and effects of those events. It helped me remember why I loved the first book and furthermore, the characters. Phoebe breathes on the pages, blissfully unaware of her own beauty and confused like all of us are/were in our teens; Adam is struggling to find himself given the events of the last book (his sensei visiting really got me...well everything with Adam pretty much did); and Pete is lost and as vile as ever. I enjoyed getting to know Karen so much more as well Tak. The world that Mr. Water's has created really expands with this book and I am grateful to have read it. It's such a strangely relevant story with the way the world is nowadays - polarizing politics, the fight for rights, and just the sheer craziness of finding one's self in a world that doesn't seem to make any sense - maybe that's what affects me so much...who knows? I won't give anything away plot or detail, it's just not my thing. All I can say is I can't wait to read the next installment of Phoebe, Adam, Margi and all the other characters I now love even more. I haven't wanted for a sequel so much since Harry Potter...and that is saying something. The board is set for a crazy third book...they'd better get to publishing it soon! Read Generation Dead and Kiss of Life...and tell EVERYONE you know to do the same. I'm 27 and think this book would appeal to anyone...I only wish I'd had a series like this to relate to when I was in my teens. Regardless, I love it just the same at my age. READ IT is all I can say.

I liked the 2nd book to Generation Dead. It was a bit slow but I found myself reading the first one again to compare pre Adam and post Adam. I didn't like the way Adam was so hard on himself "FrankenAdam". I just wanted to hold him and tell him it would all work out. I did like the end. I wish there where more scenes with Phoebe and Adam courting (dating). I wanted to see the love (or the love that was already there) grow deeper with interaction. Also curious - Can zombies have sex or at least can the boys have sex? And they don't age - this could be a problem with a long commitment - the author never brought up either one of these topics which I think might be important down the road. I know it is a YA book - but if Pete can talk about how he likes to "get tail" I think it would have been okay to discuss. Hopefully the author will shed some light on the topic on the next book. But again - Loved the ending.

Sometimes the little things aren't enough,
This review is from: Generation Dead: Kiss of Life (Generation Dead Novels) (Paperback)
Oh the land of the not-so-dead, how I have come to heart you so....
This is one of those series where the 2nd book is actually better than the first. Whereas the second book in most series is what I call a "bridger" this was not. It was SOOOOOOO much more than I thought it was going to be. In fact this series has completely suprised me in the most fantastic way. I picked Generation Dead up in the clearance section at my local book store for 1 reason, the cover was ironic and cool. I didn't expect much out of it however. Just a little light reading to break up the heart renching series that I've been reading. Boy I couldn't have been more wrong. Daniel Waters has not only introduce my into the world of zombies, he has left my in love with them. Phoebe is lost as usual in this book. Not knowing which way to go or what she is supposed to do. But who can blame her? Poor Phoebe almost dies because of her living impaired boyfriend Tommy, but instead Adam steps up to the plate and saves the day. The price Adam payed was his life....well his "living" one that his. Since Adam has come back Phoebe is trying to help him find is way all the way "back". He like so many living impared kids has trouble talking, walking, and just about everything else we "living" people take for granted. She doesn't know how to juggle both Tommy and Adam so she pushes Tommy away. I loved how the point of views switched back and forth giving us an inside look into Adam. Seeing inside Adam's head, hearing the world as he perceives it, well it broke my heart. I spent the majority of this book feeling like I couldn't breath, especially when reading Adam's thoughts. It literally felt like someone had put my heart in a vice. With every thought he had for Phoebe the vice squeezed tighter. This isn't just your typical love story. There is alot of twists and turns and I still HATE Pete. I locked him in a cage and threw away the key in the first book and I assure you that I set his cage on fire during this one, but he wasn't the only one in that cage if you know what I'm saying;) Now that you have heard what I had to say I will leave you with this.... Buy it, borrow it, rent it, steal it if you have too, but you need to READ this book!!!

I went into this novel with high hopes and I was not disappointed. After about having a heart attack when book one Generation Dead, I hoped this one left off where the last one had ended. It did and I was pleasantly surprised.
The two books were extremely different, but both equally good. This one seemed a little more on the emotional side, with me hoping that Adam would come around faster. I fell in love with him right alongside Phoebe. I found myself a little bored with Pete's chapters, but I read them anyway, figuring they'd be important to the plot. They were, but I still just wanted to skip ahead to Phoebe and Adam's chapters. I look forward to another in this series, and I figure I won't be disappointed - the story was wrapped up, but there were several loose ends, character wise - Colette, Karen, Tak, Pete, etc. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and definitely will watch for another book in the series in the future.

Too slow - hoped it'd be faster-paced than Generation Dead but it was actually slower,

I just barely decided to buy this book after finishing Generation Dead. I really wanted to know what happened with Adam and Phoebe after he saved her life and became differently biotic (living dead), even though I found Generation Dead kind of slow-moving, the concept was original and the ending was kind of a cliff-hanger so I went for it.
But this book if anything was slower-paced than the last. The way the author shows that differently biotic people speak slowly is... like... this... Which makes for arduous, tiresome reading. I'd find that my mind slowed to accommodate the differently biotic and their ways of speaking, but honestly, nothing any of them said was worth slowing down for, which would be a mean thing to say in real life, but in a novel is just annoying. I just found this whole second book kind of dull. If you LOVED the first one - this one's fairly similar and you'll probably like it. If you only want to buy the second because the author did a cliffhanger ending on the first book, then skip this. You can guess generally what happens and be right - just move on to a faster-paced series.

Generation Dead Part 2,
By Danny (Lacey, NJ USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Generation Dead: Kiss of Life (Generation Dead Novels) (Hardcover)
Kiss of Life is the second book in the Generation Dead Series. It is a good follow up. It picks up right where the first one left off. The 1st book was my favorite book i read last year. The sequel is good but not as great as the 1st one. Its a fast read, took me 2 days. Kiss of Life is somewhat slower than the 1st one and most of the action takes place towards the end of the book. It leaves you wanting more, hopefully a third book is in the future. My main problem with the book is that Tommy is hardly in it. He was a huge character in the 1st one, and was upset he wasnt in this one much. Phoebe and Adam are still in it a lot, so thats good. I did like their story, it was nice. Bring back Tommy, to make the 3rd a great love triangle.

Phoebe's trying to adjust to life after Adam's death - and zombie return. She doesn't really know how to act around him, but she tries desperately to make him happy. He's having a hard time getting back his range of movements and talking normally again. Still, she wants to be there. Adam thinks differently, he wants her to live again - not to be consumed with the guilt she feels. But he can't find the words to express his thoughts.
Phoebe also feels guilty about Tommy. She knows he still has feelings for her, but she can't even wrap her head around her own emotions. All she knows is that she needs to be strong for Adam. When Tommy decides to leave and trek across the country educating people about zombies, Phoebe knows its for the best but she can't help feeling hurt by his actions. Can she find herself again and still be with Adam? A love triangle becomes messy with 2 undead boys and one living girl, but it also equals a fabulous zombie romance. But there's much more to this book than romance. People are afraid of the undead and start attacking them. It's starting to happen in Oakville. Tensions are rising and it might be time for the Zombies to fight for their way of life - which makes for an interesting take on prejudice.
