6 of 6 people found the following review helpful:
5.0 out of 5 stars One of the seminal books on the pre-WWI period, May 6, 1998
This review is from: A Generation of Materialism, 1871-1900 (The Rise of Modern Europe, edited by William L. Langer) (Hardcover)
The publisher is right is saying this is one of the finest works describing the pre-World War One era. The book's chapters on the rise of the masses and the foment of anti-Semitism stand as classics in their depth and discernment. This is a MUST read for any student of the pre-WWI period in European history. Hayes lively account of the times and issues makes issues come alive and puts the rest of the 20th century into context.
