Book Description

June 1998
Coming to terms with being gay in this society can be a stressful and lonely experience. Now, drawing on his own journey from troubled teenager to world-renowned bodybuilder to proud activist, Bob Paris has written an intelligent and uplifting new book designed to inspire homosexuals to be proud of who they are, and build healthy self-esteem and relationships. Paris reflects on such issues as the generation gap between older and younger gays; coping with the bias of traditional religions; and the self destructive behaviors masked as "partying" that are rampant in the gay community. In addition, Paris answers several of the most moving letters sent to him by homosexuals and their loved ones. Provocative, honest, and inspiring, "Generation Queer" is a groundbreaking tour-de-force from one of the gay community's most admired icons.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Bob Paris, a former Mr. Universe, became internationally famous when he came out in the early 1990s. His relationship with bodybuilder-model Bob Jackson made national headlines when they appeared as an openly gay couple on the cover of International Muscle Mag, and in 1994 they wrote Straight from the Heart, a joint autobiography. Generation Queer is a meditative volume of thoughts and advice to young people about coming out, loving, and seeking social justice in a world that seems, all to often, to hate homosexuals. As in his 1997 Gorilla Suit: My Adventures in Bodybuilding, Paris is perceptive and engaging.

The first half of Generation Queer offers Paris's personal contemplation of what it has meant to be gay; the writing here is gentle and reflective as he describes his transformation from closeted small-town boy to gay icon. In the book's second half, Paris answers 19 questions from young gay men and women, offering sound, sometimes surprising advice about how to make your way in the world even while you're changing it. Alternately funny, sensible, and spiritual, Paris's answers attempt to map a new world in which younger gay people can be safe, happy, and sexual. --Michael Bronski

From Library Journal

Paris, the author of four physical fitness books and coauthor of Straight from the Heart (LJ 1/94), with his former partner, Rod Jackson-Paris, is now 37 and sees himself on the cusp between baby boomers and Gen Xers. Though his sweetly na?ve belief that plumbing his own experience will help others is well-intentioned, the self-indulgence and verbosity of his ruminations provide little of value as he invokes religious and New Age platitudes, offers prayers to the "Infinite Spirit," and espouses empty aphorisms like "Self-love is what will heal our world." The second half of his book is spent answering 19 questions on everything from partners to parenting, gleaned from letters he has received, and ends: "Generation Queer: brothers and sisters who move together with love out of the darkness and into a paradise of our own creation." Among the many similar self-help titles, more useful is Michelangelo Signorile's Life Outside (LJ 7/97).AJames E. Van Buskirk, San Francisco P.L.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Every Gay Man or Woman!, August 13, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Generation Queer: A Gay Man's Quest for Hope, Love, and Justice (Hardcover)
Who would have thought a former Mr. Universe and Gay Activist would have so much going on upstairs! What I mean is that Bob Paris' new book, Generation Queer, is the kind of book that makes you stop and think, and reflect on your own experiences, then evaluate where to go from here. I enjoyed Bob's honesty and candor in dealing with the many problematic situations presented. His advice is insightful and not the typical "force-fed" rhetoric you find in so many of the gay activist books on the market. At last someone is addressing questions like, How to deal with spiritual concerns and family relationships from a realistic point of view. I found many of my own private questions were discussed in length and that I'm not alone in my concerns. I'm hoping there will be another edition in the near future. I had only two disappointments: (1) After so many mentions of the "mailbag", where's the address so others can share? (2) There's no pictures. (but, then its not that kind of book.) By the way, I was able to meet Bob Paris at a recent booksigning in West Hollywood, and found him to be as real and thoughtful as he is in print.

5.0 out of 5 stars Uplifting, healing words for all, desperately needed today., June 17, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Generation Queer: A Gay Man's Quest for Hope, Love, and Justice (Hardcover)
Bob Paris proves that there is an extraordinary heart and brain under his Mr. Universe muscles. He answers questions which will help to guide young people to live a moral, kind, loving life. His advice is helpful not only to gay persons, but to the relatives of the rapidly-growing "out" gay population - and their friends and associates. This book can serve as a guide to keeping families together, and it is filled with genuine love- even for people who actively hate and persecute gay persons just for being gay. It is a remarkable book which will help many to live a happier, more forgiving, and more loving life. Bob Paris will astonish many with the wisdom he has accrued, and the capacity he has to uplift and inspire.

I gotta admire Bob Paris for coming out and being a (somewhat unwilling) spokesperson for Gay Rights. And apparently he wrote this himself (no ghost writer). But this reads like a sophmoric treatise. Still, it's a gutsy attempt.
He covers much the same ground (not in as much detail) in "Straight from the Heart" (with Rod Jackson). I found that a better read.
